i tried reinstalling windows the problem still stays. i dont want to ask the geek squad at best buy because they will charge 200 bucks. it freezes when im just doing common tasks. if i restart it after it freezes it will just freeze a min after booting it up again. ive been trying to fix this problem since march. ive only had this pc for a year.

the motherboard is a soyo kt600 dragon plus v 1.0
    120 gig harddrive
    256 ram
and a ati 9200 graphics card

It could be a ram, harddrive, heat or maybe even a psu issue.Try removing the ram and cleaning the contacts, reseat the ram(actually I would suggest getting at least 512mb for XP.)Have you heard any strange sounds coming from the case? When was the last time you checked the heatsink/fan for dust, pet hair?(if applicable)

Are you getting error messages? The more info you give, the easier it will be to help you.I'm leaning more toward it being the memory, try running memtest and see what you get for results.

    Here's a nice little troubleshooting chart I believe toocool4u posted a while back,it comes in handy>http://www.fonerbooks.com/power.htm

I'll go fetch up a link for memtest and post it for you.

    Ok,here's the link>http://www.memtest86.com/
make sure to read and follow all directions.I have to go to work now,I'll check back with you tonight.

One more thought before I leave...check out device manager and see if you have any question marks listed,Post what they're next to if you find any.Gotta run!

    Good luck.

not task manager as that is from ctrl-alt-del. device manager is in control panel\system. what is your cpu temp in the bios after computer freezes?

Lol firstly, there's no need to ask the people at geeksquad to help, we probably know more collectively anyway, and it's free.

Did you reinstall ATI's Catalyst after reformatting? If the problem always came with a VPU recover before, and now doesn't but still remains, it sounds like it has something to do with video. Try the numbskull and get a later driver and see what happens. Temperatures would also be good!

You can download a program called Hmonitor for free. If that doesn't work then you can go into the BIOS after the crash, but thats a bit more complex.

That's quite high to be honest, my CPU is about 145 and that's about as high as it should get (well higher but I haven't experienced any problems).

Erm, how clean is your case? Could do with dusting, and you could probably do with some extra ventilation...

have you checked the ati for dust and fluff, graphics cards can freeze a system too.

open the lefthand sidepanel of tower to look at the motherboard. look at the can shaped objects that are capacitors. have to be flat topped not domed. are there any domed capacitors there?
