I am having trouble with my computer, Yesterday i booted it up and it said ntoskrlnl.exe. not found please install, and then it won't finish booting up. It is a sony vaio so it doesn't come with system disc's to do a repair so i have to revover the whole system. Problem is there are alot of pictures and music that i need on the system,Is there anyway to hook the hard drive up to my other PC and copy files from that hard drive that hard drive to another hard drive on that computer? I just need some sort of program that you guys reccomend.Any help would be much appreciated.
pull the drive and hook it up as a slave in another compie. backup the system, then put the hard drive back in the vaio and reformat/reinstall windows. *edit* i should probably go into more detail. once you remove the vaio's hard drive, set the jumpe to "slave" and connect it to the slave port on an ide cable in your compie. no special software is needed; just copy and paste the data you need to the other computer's hard drive or burn it to disk. pull the vaio drive, set it back to master, reinstall it in the vaio, and use either recovery disks (which you'll have to order from Sony) or a regular copy of windows to format/reinstall windows. then you can either network the drives to copy everything back, copy it off the burned disks, or pull the drive again, and put it back in the other computer (as slave) and do the opposite of what you did to back everything up.
i got it all hooked up but it say the drive must be formatted,Ican't view the files until i format,I don't want to do that because i have alot of files that need to be backed up.The vaio has a built in recovery wizard so i don't need the disks. So whenever i backup my stuff i can recover the system.
the jumper is set to Slave and you have it on a Slave port on the IDE cable? and it's still telling you that you need to format? do you have some kind of security encryption?
the jumper is set to slave, just for good measure the slave plugin on the cable is all the way on the end correct? And when i go to my computer it shows up as D: but when i go into properties it doesn't say how much space there is on the drive or anything. No i don't have any security encryption, just for good measure the slave plugin on the cable is all the way on the end correct?
nope; one end is the master, the other end hooks to the motherboard. it's the middle one that's the slave.
Nope,Same story.I don't know what to do,I thought maybe there was a program that could access unformatted hard drives.
no, you shouldn't need some special program. this is very weird. you might have to resort to some data recovery solutions. pm ddp about that..he's got quite a bit of experience and could probably suggest some freeware. sounds to me almost like your hard drive could be dying.
ok,i'm downloading the 48 urgent updates that i needed to install,I never hook this thing up to the internet so it hasn't been updated in awhile.
yeah; once you have those, look through any others and pick out what you think you should probably have. then try it all again ddp! where are you? heheh
ok,it would be nice to be installing those on something other than an old Gateway. It sure would be nice to able to get this figured out,if cheap sony would include OS disc's i could run a repair instead of wiping it clean.
