i have a dell 8400 and the mobo is Dell Dimension 8400 can i overclock my pc and if i do what do i gotta buy?
I think you won't be able to overclock it because mobo's that come with Dell's, Hp's, and other pre-assembled computers have locked mobo's. I had a a630n Hp and I tried the same thing. Unfortunately, I think you might have to buy a new mobo in order to overclock it.
a prebuilt's bios tends to be very limiting. to have the freedom to overclock, you have to take a detour around such limitations and build your own system or at least put in a new motherboard.
Asus, Asrock...really, there's dozens of good brands to choose from. check out newegg. http://www.newegg.com
& 1 that fits your case as a regular board won't fit into a micro-atx case but a micro-atx board will fit into a regular height tower. also watch out for different size motherboard/psu power connectors.
Yeah dell boards are traditionally locked down tight, to prevent people from modfiying them and causing problems that Dell don't want to have to deal with. Just get a board to match your socket, if it's 775 then something like an Asus P5LD2 Standard would be a good purchase for overclocking.
well... im really stupid when it comes to socket's and other stuff lol sorry. can you use any type of process on a mobo?? like could i use a intel on a asus mobo?
you can't use an AMD chip on a board designed for Intel chips or vice-versa. just check the compatibility listings of whatever board you're interested in to make sure it's okay for whatever series your chip is in.
the brand's irrelevant as to compatbibility most of the time. You could use an Intel in an asus board, but only a P4 or P5 series, and you could also use an AMD in an asus board but only an A8 or M2 series.
oh, alright thank you auslander and sammorris now im bigining to understand, im more of a software junkie then hardware
Sure, we all have our areas of expertise, lord knows you'd probably trounce me on some software things, but after all, I am but 18!
lol, hey this is off subject but i was wondering when and how do i loose this newbie status because i have a few threads that im posting on and stuff and i hate the 3 minute wait post because i am a newbie.
i'd tell you, man, but this gets answered at least twice a week. out of principle, i'm going to have to tell you to use the search function. search for "rank," "status," etc.
Yep. I'd avoid making a pest of yourself to shed a newbie status tag, that's frowned upon in the world of forums.
ok now i need help again, what is north birdge and south bridge??? and whats duel channel? and in the cpu type it says Intel Pentium 4 EE HT whats the ee?? can i still use a regular intel pentium 4 ht ???
