    I can:

    get a DS Lite
get M3 (not supercard you cheap bastards)
    edit: get a PASSCARD3
get a few 1Gb A-data Myflash SD cards
    - set them to be 4xDMA (to prevent some games from being choppy)

and then be able to load some "ok" emulators, DS backups, GB/C/A roms, movies AND mp3s?

what i'm not sure about is this firmware business. what firmware does what.. wtf is E12 E15 E16.... almost look like memory bank addresses

Also get a Passcard3 so you can run DS games etc. from the M3.
You don't format the SD card to 4xDMA, thats a setting you can choose when putting the games onto the SD card, format the SD card to FAT32.

The "firmware business" is easy when you know how it works.
the number (which is currently 21) is what version it is currently at.
the letter 'E' is English, there is also a 'C' for chinese
some versions also have a letter at the end (E21b, E21c) that is because it's the same version, but with bug-fixes.

And yes, get M3, supercards for the cheap gamers which believe that "other than GBA slowdowns the supercard is just as good".
