Hi, I'm not that well up on computer upgrades or stuff like that so I have a question that someone might be able to help me out with. Basically my sister has a philips windows 98 pc. She hasn't used in in awhile, now when she turns it on, it says hardware error and wont start up but sometimes it does start up. She only has dial up internet too to make things worse! She also has no burner on the pc just a rom drive for playing dvd's. I reckon it's riddled with virus. I tried to download spybot, adaware and a couple other programes, but after the download is complete and I try execute the file, it say error, cant execute. I then burned my version of spyware doctor to cd and dvd, but when I insert it in the drive, it won't load. Basically nothing happens. On the version pc she has, there is no system restore just a system fix wizard. After I run that, still no difference. It's a few years old at this stage and she'll prob buy a new one but I thought I'd just post up just incase her pc can be upgraded to a later version via software? Or maybe there is a way of running some sort of spyware remover? Thanks Sandisk
sounds a like format is needed to me, does she still have the Windows 98 disk to reinstall with? If she doesnt but still has the key available maybe stickied on the case somewhere, then download it or burrow it off someone. Computer runnin for 2 years im guessin its riddled with viruses and spyware. About the Hardware error where does this appear, is this once in windows or before windows loads? *next time try to post in correct forum*
Sorry I misread the forum title, maybe one of the mods could move it to the right place! The hardware error starts before windows loads up. Like I said, sometimes windows wont load up at all. No she has nothing left belonging to the pc, ie software. The pc she has, has a floppy disc drive. I'll ask my mates and see if they have windows 98. If they did, how would I load it up? Would it be on floppy disc or cd? The anti-virus I tried install wont load up. I dont know it's because its on a burned disc or what? I know it shouldn't make a difference, maybe because the pc is so old? even though it has no burner, should it still read burned data, cd,dvd's? Because it wont. once again sorry for posting this in the wrong place, when i copped it, I felt like an ass :O)
toss it and get a new one, you will spend more money trying to upgrade it then you would just buying a new computer, you can get machines for a couble of big ones nowadays, not only that microsoft is cutting off support for win98/me. Ditch it and save yourself untold of headaches
Hi, yes she is getting a new one. I just thought that there was maybe something that could be done to save it. Like you said, probably just better getting rid of the thing. thanks for the reply.
