I'm trying to use my old star trek game with my gateway which uses MS Windows XP serice pack 2 but i keep gettin an error and I am not sure how to fix it, or get around it. the Error is as follows:

"Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Enhanced CD-ROM requires 560k of free low memory and 1024k of free EMS (expanded) memory to play. You currently have 618k free low memory and 0 k free EMS memories.

Try moving your TSR’s and Device Drivers into high memory, or remove them completely. Be sure you are not running a DOS shell from Windows.

If you have more memory in your computer, we recommend you free up even more EMS memory to speed yup the game – 2048k free EMS is recommended."

How do i, or can I, get around this problem so I can use my old game on my newer computer?

    PS

I'm an ignorant when it comes to patchwork, so please explain it as neatly as possible. thanks

Old games intended for DOS do not like Win XP. You may need to get another "old" computer with real DOS to run the old games.

You may or may not have success running old games under XP if check out the following links for DOSBox and D-Fend. I have heard of these sites and they have been written up in PCGamer magazine. I have never actually tried them myself.

    DOSBox: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

    D-Fend: http://members.home.nl/mabus/

    Goodluck.

Another good site for info on running older games is
    http://vogons.zetafleet.com
It is the support forum for DOSBox and VDMSound. Besides the Hitchhikers reference, Vogons stands for Very Old Games On New Systems in this case.
I know I have seen several posts from people saying that they are running it with DOSBox. I played through the first mission a while back and it seemed to run fine. I have a 486 and Pentium 100 that I keep for playing old DOS games, but DOSBox is getting better and better with every release.
A Final Unity is the one that most people have trouble with running under DOSBox.
