    Hi

I've been looking at these three so far:

    Maxtor DiamondMax 11 500GB S300 @ £155.68

    Western Digital Caviar 500GB S300 @ £156.14

    Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 500GB S300 @ £169.86

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB S300 @ £17614

They are all s300 (which I think means SATA 2?) and my motherboard is a Asrock P4VT8+. In the manual it says the "sata supports up to 1.5gb/s data transfer rate", will the sata2 drives work with my mboard?

I've always trusted maxtor drives, but have read that this particular one has problems with non sata2 motherboards. Which drive should I get for good performance?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Your mobo supports SATA (not SATA2).
You can run a SATA2 harddisk, no problem - sometimes there is a jumper on the SATA2 harddisk, to manually set SATA mode (for a non-SATA2 mobo).
All the HDs have 16MB cache... personally I would get the WD, but they are all good. I don't think the Seagate 7200.9 is worth the extra money (maybe if it was the new 7200.10) but, you will find 'Seagate people' however I am not one.
    Regards
