Ok, I'm currently trying to fix up the subtitles of a DVD (Battle Royale special edition, lots of good extra scenes that really contribute to the movie, but poorly done english subtitles). Now, I've seen posts like this before, with the people advised to try using Subtitle Workshop. I downloaded that, but it doesn't seem to be of any help (or maybe I just don't know the proper way to use it, so maybe someone here could give me a little walkthrough). The thing is, when I open subtitle workshop, I try going to "Movie" on the upper bar, and opening a VOB file from the DVD itself (I copied all the files from the DVD to experiment on so I don't ruin the DVD). Now, it plays the segment from the movie, but with no subtitles. To enable subtitles on the Battle Royale DVD, you go to Language settings or whatever and enable your choice of English or Korean subtitles. But the thing is, I can't find any way to even make the English subtitles appear, I can only play the video without any subtitles at all, and I see no option to make the english subs appear so I can edit them. Now, if what I'm trying to do is even possible, please tell me how to step-by-step, because even the help file did not explain anything about editing EXISTING subtitles, so I'm not even sure if editing them is even possible, even though people here have recommended Subtitle Workshop for doing so. I'd really, really appreciate the help, I've tried looking for weeks now, and have had little progress on fixing up the subtitles. If there are any other methods of fixing up the subtitles, then please tell me, I'll do everything I can to do so. (God, I love that movie... =P) I am also aware that I'm pretty bad at explaining, so if you have a question about my request that needs clearing up, then please ask me to elaborate... If you want to edit the subtitles on a DVD you have to first rip them off the DVD and get them into text format. They're in bitmap format on the DVD and you can't edit them. Use Subrip to get them off the DVD as an .srt text file. Once they are in .srt format then you can load them into Subtitle Workshop to edit them. http://www.divx-digest.com/software/subrip.html
If your goal is to burn a new version of your movie with your new subtitles then you'll need to demux your original DVD to get the elementary audio and video streams. Next, convert your newly edited .srt subtitle file into a .sup file, then mux everything back together so you can burn a new DVD. I've only done this working with the main movie. If you want to keep your DVD menus I'm not sure of the exact steps you'd take. But to get a new version of your movie without menus with your new subs: I've used PgcDemux to demux the DVD to get the video and audio streams. After that I used TmpgEnc Plus to mux the video and audio streams I got from PgcDemux into a temporary .mpg file and I loaded that .mpg and the ripped .srt from Subrip into Subtitle Workshop to edit the subs. There may be an easier way without using TmpgEnc but I didn't know how else to get the audio into Subtitle workshop. After you've finished editing your subtitles, save them as .srt. Then use txt2sup to convert them to a .sup file. Do I really have to pay for Muxman? Or will the demo work? I'm also trying to rip the subs as an .srt file, but when I open the .srt file, all of the subs are replaced with "BRtest00001.sup", "BRtest00002.sup", and so on. I'm very confused here right now, I tried reading the help file but it's only talking about using the OCR.
Yikes! This is a NEW development. Until very recently Muxman used to be freeware. Very sad.
