Alright so the new generation games like Crysis support dual core. Right now, an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ would be a very good cpu for games, better than 90% of X2's out there right now. But how big will the improvement be with a dual core cpu in the near future? In Vista? Is it worth waiting and spending more money on a Conroe or is it just fine buying an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ for the near future(1-2 years after Vista)??? I'm not an Uber gamer, but I like playing games and would like games running at 30FPS at the minimum? For my needs, will the single core 3800+ be enough for 1-2 years after Vista?
thats exactly what i wanted to ask.. 1 more question How about the video card? Will a card like Geforce 7600 be able to handle games down the road?
Quote; "Will a card like Geforce 7600 be able to handle games down the road?" As long as the settings in the game are not set to max, anti-aliasing & anisoptric filtering is low, then it would be OK, only OK. You really need to get a 7900 to get the games looking good at reasonable FPS. As for Vista, ewwww. No thanks..... Not many, games are dual core compatible. To get 30FPS in a high end game needs a good card, but seens as you are not an "uber gamer" (LOL!) that wouldn't be much of a problem. Personally I prefer AMD, not too bothered about the hype surrounding these Conroe chips. AMD won't take long to catch up. A 4 gig twin core AMD is just over £100 at the mo', well worth it. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Socket_939.html
Haha thanks Pulsar. I already decided to go with the AMD Athlon 64 3800+ and if that is not satisfactory when Vista and dual-core games come out, then hell I'll get a dual core. But for now, the single core 3800+ is more than what I need(OC'ed to 2.9-3.0Ghz, it outperforms even some of the FX procesors like the FX-55). Thanks again guys!
I have an x2 3800 and it does alot better than you would think. most games that dont support dual core are old enough that I can play on max settings anyways. You definitly shouldn't get a 3800 right now. When conroe comes out, youll be able to get an x2 3800 for $170 and an x2 4800 for $300. as for the 7600gt, its a pretty good card, it should be able to handle vista aero no problem, but a 7900 would be better and waiting for the 8 series would be best
