My cable box only has a DVI connection. My HDTV has an HDMI connection. In reading this thread I can connect my HDTV using a DVI-HDMI cable, but did I read correctly that it only carries video and I would have to connect separate audio cables to get the audio?

You are correct. Your cable box should have stereo RCA audio outs. If you have an A/V receiver you can use digital coax or optical for 5.1 sound.
