Is it possible someone with a key generator generated your key? If that is the case, just ask valve for a new one.

Because you can't just easily download and burn a console game. For PC, you can easily get a working pirated version, therefore, they need verification you have a legal version.

Yes, but you can't play them without a modchip. Which is "tricky" to install and turns people away. Unlike just installing it and applying a crack.

Yes, but they have to assume not everyone has internet. Alot of people got mad when they found out that Half-life 2 needed online activation.

Just wondering, lets presume three guys dont have internet,ok?
They all went out and bought the same game, all had the same serial number, and guy A installed the game before guy B and C, does that mean that guy B and C cant install the game, with that serial number?
Because how will their cd know that the serial had already been used?

It will install fine, and work in single player, but if more than one tries to play online, only the first one to start can play, the others will get a "cd key is in use" notice, and not be allowed to play.

True, but there are probably 500 legal servers for every illegal one. Let's just face it, no matter what protection is created, it will be bypassed faster than in the time it took to develop it. These protections are for the "average" consumer, who doesn't even know what a ".exe" is.

^ Listen to him, wise advice. If you are caught doing that, you can be fined upward to $2000 or more. You never know if a kid has a cop for a dad or something. Also, you can get banned from this site for mentioning that. It is a serious thing.
