For DivX/XviD encoding, would you suggest Athlon XP 2800/3000 or P4 2.53/2.66?

Hello, I've looked around on the forum for a while before posting this, but I can't seem to find a topic that directly addresses it, so I'm starting one.

I am planning to build a new, relatively cheap system. I am trying to decide between an AMD or P4 chip. I know that video encoding is processor intense, not memory heavy (or I think I know this, correct me if I'm wrong). I know that the Athlon XPs support SSE1 but I believe they do not have SSE2, and their clock rate is significantly slower, even though their FUs are, I understand, significantly better.

XviD has explicit SSE2 support, I assume DivX uses it as well, does anyone know how big a difference the lack of SSE2 will make? Can anyone direct me to some benchmarks for large size encoding on these chips? Any further suggestions?

    Thank you.

I dont really know much about SSE1 and SSE2 but can give you an idea of encoding times on the p4 2.66 I just got. Encoding a dvd rip of about 2 hours in 2 pass xvid takes me approx. 2 hours per pass (it encodes at almost exactly real time). Doing the same 2 pass divx takes me about 10% less time than the source length (per pass)(faster than real time). So if anyone can provide encoding times for their AMD 2800/3000 you should be able to make a good choice. Hope I've helped

You can build a system much cheaper purchasing an Athlon cpu m8. If you're gonna go Athlon 3.0 then I recommend that you purchase a mobo that supports 400 front side bus speed and dual channel sd-ddr400 (PC 3100) memory (128 bit). A mobo that supports ultra ata 133(hd) would help dramatically and the support of 8x agp video, usb 2.0 would be nice. Look at some prices at MSI (Micro Star) or Asus. My mobo supports most of the features mentioned above and you can probably purchase the mobo online for about 100 buckaroos (US)... I would certainly think that you can. Bios update supports the AthlonXP 3.0 Barton (400 fsb speed) ).

Hold on a minute here people. Paxundae, are you sure you should be building a computer yourself if you cant even deside yourself what system to build? Its not going to make a blind bit of difference what high-end computer you choose for encoding Xvid and DivX. Anybody sensible sets it up to encode while they are in bed asleep, so for the sake of a few minutes.......
