I never really used subtitles because, id always like to listen, but sometimes I get a video in a diffferent language, and its encoded in XVID/ DIVX, I download english subs and they dont work. I use VLC, what program is the best for playing videos? mpc? vlc? divx?

also, I downloaded subtitles from several sources. This isnt for one movie, its for several.

Best is purely subjective. I like mplayer myself, but VLC and MPC both support subs with MPC having the best subtitle support.

Subtitles and players get along with the right formats.
Usually most accepted format is .srt

I suggest you download Subtitle workshop which enables to convert between formats...
