Can directv and tivo work together?

I have a tivo unit, the basic model without and dvr, and I recently got directv. Can they work together or do you have to get a directv w/ tivo unit?

The answer is yes, why would you think it wouldn't, just set the channel you want to record and TIVO with put it on its HD.
