Hey, Does any one know the requirements of running a sata II harddrive?? Lol i know i need a sata enabled harddrive. I also know i need a sata power plug + a sata enabled motherboard. But what about power?? Are sata drives power hungry?? Lecsiy
These are from very similar size Samsung drives. Should give you an idea of the requirements vs. a standard IDE drive. Standard IDE hdd Voltage +5V±5% Spin Up Current (max.) 5.0W mA Seek4 (typ.) 2.4 W Read/Write On-Track (typ.) 2.4 W Low Power Idle (typ.) 0.85 W Standby (typ.) 0.25 W Sleep (typ.) 0.1 W SATA hdd Voltage 5V°±5% / 12V°±10% Spin Up Current (max.) 820 / 2250 mA Read/Write On-Track(typ.) 8.5 W Seek2(typ.) 9.5 W Idle(typ.) 7.7 W Standby(typ.) 0.9 W Sleep(typ.) 0.9 W SATA2 hdd Voltage +5V±5%, +12V±10% Spin Up Current (max.) 650/1900 mA Seek (typical) 9.5 W Read/Write (typical) 8.0 W Idle (typical) 7.5 W Standby (typical) 0.7/1.5 W Sleep (typical) 0.7/1.5 W Hope this helps. ~Rich
You could also use this PSU calculator, its the best I've found so far. Its just depressing when you get a reading from it saying that you need at least 828 Watts from your PSU.(No wonder my electricity bill is so high!) http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp Its reading shows a 7200rpm SATA drive uses about 13Watts, compared to a 7200 IDE using 15Watts.
Aaaa i see thanks for links bigdk. OO now your here let me just thank you for your soundcard/speaker help. It rocked! Ive never heard sound soo good!!! Thank you very much Lecsiy
