Hello again everyone, I've got a two part question. I have a TV monitor that I want to hook my computer up to. The monitor has a VGA connection so I should be able to get a video signal to it but what about sound? 1) Am I able to connect the Audio OUT from my computer to the Audio IN on my Sony Home theatre Receiver? If so, how? 2) Rather than having wires running along my floor and up the wall... is there a Wireless option to connect the VGA Out from my computer the the VGA IN on my monitor? If so, can you tell me where I can find the equipment and if I need a direct line of sight. I'm thinking of puting the computer in an entertainment unit about 10ft. off to the side of the TV. Thanks for any and all input.
Hello there, I use a PC for my media centre at home, so I should be able to point you in the right direction. Although, it would have been better with a little more specification detail... Like sound card etc. FOR THE SOUND... I have a 7.1 channel sound card with optical output so I connect to my reciever via optical. This is always the best choice as it sends the raw data (or PCM depending on the audio compression) to the reciever for it to be converted to the highest quality sound possible. The next best choice would be a coaxial connection (looks similar to a single RCA jack), which can also transmit raw data (or PCM) but not quite as good as an optical cable can. The last choice would be to simply connect via analog. Again your sound card would dictate what options you have. If you have 5.1 channel analog output, then you could hook up 3 cables (1 for front L/R, 1 for centre/subwoofer, 1 for rear L/R) to get the full home theatre range. If however you only have a regular 2 channel output jack, you can still get surround sound but you will have to enable pro-logic on your reciever (a kind of simulated 6 channel surround sound taken from a 2 channel source). FOR THE VIDEO... I am not sure I can help too much with this... I have heard of media streaming devices that can send video, audio etc. over a wireless link. With these devices you do not need direct line of sight. As far as I know infra-red is the only wireless method where you would need direct line of sight, and there is no way this would have anywhere near the required bandwidth to stream video, audio media etc. These devices use technology like Wi-Fi etc. I would think that these devices are best put to use when you want to deliver media to a room or somewhere the PC can't reach. My choice would be to connect to the display device with the VGA connection, this would certainly offer the best quality picture. I know these cables can be thick and bulky but with some careful planning you should be able to conceal it effectively. If you need to ask more questions to clarify what information I have offered, please go ahead.
Thanks for the advise. I do have a few questions. First off, regarding the VGA Cable... Will a regular VGA do fine? I was looking at them on softchoice.ca and see a few options. VGA, SXGA, & UXGA. What's the difference? I need a run of about 15 feet with both male ends if this has any impact. As far as sound goes...forgive me for being ignorant but how do I find out what sound card I have? I plan on using my wife's Mac G5 computer she bought for school 5 or 6 years ago and it has sat in a box for almost the entire time. Only recently have I brought it back out.
I'm just wondering.....tell me if I can do this.... Rather than try to run a VGA cable direct to my TV (through the walls) can I get one of the cables that have VGA on one end and the RED/BLUE/GREEN components on the other end. Contect my Computer video to the receiver (video 1 or video 2 input) and use the same Output component cables (the ones I currently use for sending my DVD player signal) to run the video to the TV? Am I making sense? It sounds right in my head. Any reason why I SHOULD NOT do this? From here I just need to figure out that sound card issue and get the audio to the tv & receiver.
I'm pretty sure, although not 100% on this but I think those cables only work the other way around... From component to VGA. You can buy a converter box though, which will convert a VGA signal to component. As far as the different types of cable goes. I was under the impression that VGA cables are all the same. Those abbreviations more refer to the resolution on your display. For the sound card... Doesn't the PC have a spec sheet or user manual? Most PC's will only have standard 2 channel output, unless you paid a bit more for a multimedia type set-up.
how about this item from ATI http://cgi.ebay.com/ATI-VGA-to-Comp...9QQihZ008QQcategoryZ64631QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem i would recomment using a video card with 2 VGA on it, you can have one connected to your TV or HDTV and the other on your pc

The rgb adapter from ati will work but only if you have a supported ati card example: I have 2 all in wonder 7500's and an all in wonder 9800 pro the rgp adapter will work on the 9800 but not the 7500's your best bet is to build a computer that will integrate with your home theatre setup, read the "I am the clay" posting, it has a lot of good information or you.
