I keep getting this weird problem with the way my computer is displaying things. It's kind of hard to explain, so please bear with me.

Basically, my computer will show everything the correct size to my monitor usually, but all of a sudden recently, it'll randomly shrink the size of the screen considerably, not using all of the monitor. There are two black parts at the two sides of the monitor where it should be showing things fully.

I can't fix the problem by resetting the computer, only by switching the computer off for a while. Is it a problem with my graphics card, or is it

Sorry if I haven't explained this very well, but it's a hard problem to explain. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Magnus, have you tried updating your graphics drivers? Are you using the most recent versions? Did this problem happen after installing something? Software or hardware? If you have the most recent drivers and it was all fine before then maybe the card is failing, contact the manufacturer and see what they say.

I uninstalled and re-installed the latest version of my graphics card's driver recently, so I know that it isn't a driver issue (although it's already caused enough problems). It's probably the graphics card failing, just one of a host of problems my computer's been having recently.

I managed to temporarily solve the problem by pressing some buttons on my monitor, so could it be a monitor issue.

I'm just glad that I'm getting a new computer soon, so I won't have to put up with these problems for too much longer.

    Hi MagnusD,
Your monitor might still function okay at a reduced refresh rate, ie. 75Hz instead of 85Hz - but it is clearly saying 'goodbye'.
Does it lose synch (loud snapping noise) sometimes? This seems probably like a monitor issue, not related to drivers or your computer at all.
Try setting a reduced (not-maximum) refresh rate from within Windows,
    Regards
