I was wondering for a long time what they are for? you know those 2 ports on the left back side of the optical drives...
Hi t229955, Back in the 90's, this was how games and multimedia audio connected to the soundcard. This connection (the 4-pin) is described as analog, and there is also a smaller (2-pin) digital connection, comparable to coaxial S/PDIF audio. Today your WMP (or whatever) can take the digital audio directly from the CD through the PCI interface. Sheesh, today's rigs can do DVD A+V in real time - but back then, PCs weren't strong enough. The old audio is still supported even on the newest motherboards, because certain (older) programs/games require this for their multimedia audio experience... ie. Quake1 - with little audio cable in place, you get Trent Reznor & Nine Inch Nails :^) Regards
