i need help on two thing. first is that could i get wireless internet if i only have a wireless network interface card and not the router. second is that if i could then if my cousin next door does have a router, does the network card has to be the same brand as the router and could it be any kind. Please help me out here. i would really appreciated if you help me. Anyone or any body Please!
moved to correct forum. yes can have wireless internet with card but what does "cousin" say about you tapping their internet?
LoL, yes lots of internet with wireless card :^) Doesn't need to be same make & model. There are standards sindude, called 802.11b and g. The 802.11g is faster, but the older b can still connect (kinda like old USB and the new USB2). If he gets upset with you, your Cousin must learn WEP (Wired-Equivalent Privacy) and secure his LAN. The general security problem, y'see, is that wireless Clients come into the LAN behind the firewall - the NAT firewall is only on the WAN (internet) side of the router. Everyone should probably secure their wireless network... There are more strict (WPA) protections but I recommend plain 64-bit WEP for most people. Simply un-ticking File and Printer Sharing offers some small measure of protection to those who connect to the internet directly (plus you must 'Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP' from your WINS setting, but I digress...) however for those sharing files on a LAN some kind of wireless access security would really definitely be needed. Make sure your Cousin administrates his router with a plug-in computer (not wireless), and gives his router a new password. What else? SSID is okay - make it something unique. Use channel 11 or whatever (everyone uses 5 or 6). Good luck to you guys! @ddp Howzit going, did you get storms? Yikes! Scary stuff... Good to see you online - many without power (many without roofs ;^) L8R
Well, you see, I have already asked my cousin on that and he agrees to let me share it with them because the are cool and after all, we all are like family.
