I just built my first computer from ground up and have a qustion to ask. when you put the heatsink/fan on the processor chip( both stock and new parts) it says the heatsink compound is there. It does have a pad on the bottom and I lined it up and put the arm down. Here comes the stupid part-was there something to peel off before seating it or does it just conduct the way it is and /or should I use compoud even though it didn't call for it at this time. No overclocking but I do want it to run cool. TIA
Hi johnnyd54, That plasticky stuff on OEM heatsinks actually works well. When the rig first heats up it will melt into place. Then when you switch off, it will cool. You now will get your lowest temps, once you restart. But if you ever remove the cooler from CPU, that stuff is history! You cannot reattach cooler without first cleaning both CPU and cooler with alcohol, and applying new compound (like Arctic Silver). Regards
I really appreciate the help but what I was wondering was if their was something to peel off(kinda like a bandaid) that I was supposed to pull off. Thanks people.
noooooooo! dude no dont remove the grey stuff that looks like a sticker thats what keeps ure pc cool and if u took it off then u need some artic silver to fix it up
I didn't remove anything but the plastic case around the whole bottom(whew). Now I just need to get the memory to try it out. Again thanks to all.
