    Ok, here goes, I pulled a Western Digital Caviar 34000 hard drive out of an old Gateway computer. I'm trying to get all of the pertinent documents etc. off of the drive. I have two IDE to USB converters; one is by Bytecc "USB 2.0 Drive Mate" and the other one is a cable from Vantec. So here's my problem, when I plug the usb end into any of my pc's, windows recognizes it as a USB MASS STORAGE Device, but it doesn't show up as a drive in Windows Explorer. I've used the Bytecc device on numerous other Hard Drives, and it works like a charm. So I emailed Bytecc and their response was the following;
    Hi,

    The WD 4GB hard drive not compatible with the BT-300 because the BT-300 has no support with DMA/33 drives.

    Thank You
    Ken
    So anyway I'm running into the same problem with the Vantec cable.
    Has anyone had this problem, and found a solution?

    Thanks in advance,
    Yabs

    You could be stuck trying to use the USB adapter because the drive is so old.

    Is there any reason why you cant plug the drive into your pc via the IDE cable? Could then pull all the docs you want off it - fire them on a dvd if needed.
