Today my Maxtor 120GB SATA drive decided to make some strange buzzing and clicking sounds. This happens a few seconds after it is powered up and isn't being recognized by the Promise Fasttrack MB controller anymore. To me it sounds like the heads are crashing into the platters. I was thinking of trying to find an exact copy of this drive and replacing the PCB board because I have some data I would like to get from the drive. Has anybody done this and is this a good idea (will it work)? Anybody know where you can buy HD PCB boards (other than eBay)? Luckily I backup semi-regularly so it isn't life or death but I would like to get some of the data back.

i've had similar problems with 3 hdds but 2 western and a seagate

i'm not sure but i think i can assume that the thing (head) that reads the magnetic disk is not in a good state

Yeah that's what I figured but sometimes it also has to do with the PCB malfunctioning and causing the heads to hit the platters. Have you ever replaced any PCBs to see if it would fix the problem?
