About 9 times of 10 I get an error message "Focus or Tracking Error". From checking out other posts, I've learned that this is a fairly generic error, having to do with the laser not finding the track on the DVD-R. I've tried three different Brands - Memorex, Fuji, and HP. I've had success with each of these up until a few weeks ago. My version of Nero is 6.6.1.4, which I know is old, but again, it's worked up until a week or two ago.
The reason I think it might be a hardware issue is that the error always pops up 3 minutes after I start burning, regardless of the DVD Brand. I'm a newbie, but it seems too coincidental that all the discs would have a defect in the same spot.
If it is a Hardware issue, is it probably something simple like cleaning the drive, or is this error symptomatic of a more serious problem?
I don't know the Manufacturer of the DVD-RW Drive. When I click on Properties it just says "Generic-DVD/RW 12X Max.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Tom

first off..... your media just isn't the best of quality. Try some Verbatim... you can get these at popular stores. I use Taiyo Yuden, I buy online (supermediastore.com, meritline.com, rima.com, etc). use the rule of thumb: Media [bold]Made in Japan[/bold] are the best, except for Verbatim that is made in Tawain/Singapore. Use those and then you'll know that you are using the best media out there.

use Nero InfoTool to find out what make and model your burner is.

And it would be nice to see a Nero log so we can find out what really went wrong.

OK, I took your advice (thanks, btw) and purchased some Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. I got the same error, at the same time in the process. Here is the log:

the only thing I would add is:

don't multi task...... you're at the bear minimum with RAM, more would be nice.

Thanks Gwendolyn and Ihoe. I'll try the Mcafee links and let you know what happens. With regards to RAM, is that something worth buying separately, or is that a sign that it's time to upgrade your PC?

OK, I installed the new Nero Version, but now have another problem. When I add the Video Files to Nero, I am unable to start the Burn Process because I get an error message saying the size of the project won't fit on the disc. Not sure what happened - the size of the files had previously been about 4.3GB, but they add up to about 5.6GB. That's after changing the settings to Extended Play or SUper Long Play and reducing the resolution settings from 720X480 to 352X480 and/or 352X240.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help.

I don't think I can get a Nero Burning Log - I don't actually get to the Burning Processs - it's just a pop-up saying the Files won't fit on the disc. Here's what I see:

Your project currently requires more disc space than available on the selected destination device.

Do you want to have the project quality reduced automatically so that your project will fit into the available space?

So I hit Yes, and then I get this message:

The project quality could not be reduced far enough to make your project fit into the available space. Try reducing project size manually.

The status bar says Used Space: 6.47 out of 7.95 GB. I'm using 4.7GB Discs. When I tried to burn this project on the older version of Nero, it would say Used Space: 4.34 out of 4.7GB.

I don't understand why the project is suddenly 2GB larger.

If I try to burn anyway, when I get to the final page, it says Your project currently exceeds the capacity of a normal DVD . . . you will only be able to write this project to a folder or to the Image Recorder.

That's as far as I've been able to get. Any ideas ow what's going on?

    Thanks.

This is the exact message protocol I have experienced.

Please excuse me for not participating more fully, I am in and out of hospital for a few weeks. But I follow your conversation with interest.

Thanks I followed your instructions and was able to work through it. Unfortunately I'm having a different problem which I will post on a new thread.

    Thanks to everyone who helped.
