DivX Standalone Player - concept

Some time ago, an Australian computer magazine published instructions on how to make an mp3 player out of old computer parts, runnining linux. In fact there is a Linux distro that is optimised for this.(I forgot the name)

Earlier this week, while telling my friend about my intention to make in the near future, an idea struck me. Why not add a graphics card with TV out or my mpeg decoder card and my Voodoo Banshee card, more hard drive space(i got lots just lying there) a CD ROM, the right software and i got a DivX standalone! it would also be able to play mp3's and other video formats, or I could put my DVD ROM into it to play DVD's.

There is a version of the DivX codec for Linux.

    My only problems are:
    software
how to make my Creative Mpeg decoder card work.

    Can anyone help?

Thats not a bad idea. Basically, you are going to need a monitor to load up the disk. This is because i cant really see how you get around not having a boot-up process.

Essentially, you could do it with one of those slim line computer cases, single CD-ROM, HD for software to be loaded onto, Graphics card with TV Out, DivX Codec.

You will have to have a DivX player installed that supports the TV out feature on the card.

Let us know how you get on
