I currently have a intel 631 processor that is a p4 at 3.0 ghz and has a 800 mhz f s b and a 2 m b cache and ht tech. How much better is the new conroe duo 2 processors better then mine? Thanks in advance

Intel will stop making P4's in Februaury. The new Core Duo 2 processors are much better then what you have now. You have to realise that you will probably have to upgrade to a newer mother board to use a Core Duo 2 processor.

Will be a shame to see the Pentiums go. They have been around for ages.

Pentiums are in no way "going"! Dual-Cores by Intel are Pentium's! Or else why are they called Pentium D??! LOL...

    P.S.
    Pentium D's are bassically dual-core Pentium 4's!!

    P.S. #2
tommy, ur processor won't be outdated for a very long time! Look at Half-Life 2, it works on a 1.2 Ghz processor! Not to mention, you can overclock a CPU when it is obsolete! Do you mean 630 instead of 631?

your p4 cpu will do fine, and will last at least for the next 1-2yrs. the conroes are supposed to be alot better than p4s, even supposed to be better than the amd athlon fx's 60/62 which to me is a very big suprise. and dont count out the p4 yet.

Core 2 Duos aren't Pentiums. Intel are dropping the pentium name for fast chips because the P4 and Pentium D was associated with inferior performance with rival AMD products, seriously. The 631 is an OK CPU, but a Core 2 Duo will walk all over it. on an old fashioned mhz scale, a 631 scores about 2800. A core 2 Duo E6600 (mid-range, £240 / $350) is TWO lots of about 5800. When your CPU is overclocked it will reach about 3400 performance level. A core 2 Duo is good for 10,000, two lots of.
With new CPUs I'd say (at stock speeds)
    X2 3800+
    X2 4200+
    E6300
    X2 4400+
    X2 4600+
    E6400
    X2 4800+
    X2 5000+
    FX-62
    E6600
    FX-64
    E6700
    X6800
In that order, slowest to fastest.

    Once overclocked?
    X2 4200+
X2 3800+ (yep, that way round!)
    X2 4600+
    X2 4400+
    X2 4800+
    X2 5000+
    FX-62
    E6300
    FX-64
    E6400
    E6600
    E6700
    X6800

    A convincing win?

Are you saying my 3800 X2 will overclock more than the 4200? How much?
