I had a Dell p4 and it went to the death blue screen... i hate microsoft... my g/f gave me a dell p3... i would fix mine but i have some rd ram and it's about $150 for 512 memory.... and then a new hard drive on top of that.... I dont want a new computer... or i have a p3 machine that i can upgrade because it uses sd ram (which is cheaper) but i would still need to upgrade the hard drive...

    Questions:

    1. is 640k ram fast enough for the internet, burning DVD's, and downloading music? this is all i use it for...
    2. how much difference will i notice using 1 gig vs. 640?
    3. I see these 600gig hard dives out there i dont think i need this much space... will all of these work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&N=2010150000 50001306&Brand=1306&Category=15

    thanks

640 [bold] KB[/bold] of RAM? That's certainly not enough for burning anything! Incase you meant 640 [bold] MB[/bold] then you should be fine. You will notice very little difference between 1GB, especially just for common tasks you have listed.

Most of those hard drives should work. 80-160GB should be sufficient for what you have stated. 600GB would be overkill. :)

How fast is that old Dell P3? Don't spend any money whatsoever on it.. It's worth about $25.. If it's less than 600MHz forget running XP as well. It will run on a 600 but not well, be prepared for a lot of fatal errors and lockups..and hanging around waiting for things to load.... They work quite nice with linux..This is a Dell P3 600 with 512 Mb ram and it's a treat with debian linux. I can burn..roam the internet and download/upload up to 6 torrents all at the same time, plus having my MSN going..not bad for effectively a yardsale pc.

Thanks bro.... i didnt think there was much difference between 640 mb and 1gig... will this make burning time on dvd's quicker? Western digital is a good hard drive right?

    Thanks for your help..
