I have just purchased a new external burner and a new external hard drive. My question relates to the hard drive. It is for my laptop, which currently has a 80GB hard drive. The new external is 320GB. I want to transfer most of my files to the new external (such as photos, mp3’s, DVD backups, and games). My only question is this….. If I want to move a program, which is already installed, can I just move it? Or will it cause problems because it is no longer in the same place as where it was installed? Would it help if after moving everything around…if I ran registry mechanic? Would that …sort of point things in the right direction or not really help at all. I want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling everything. Thank you!
If you move programs, you WILL cause trouble. Your best bet is to uninstall and reinstall the programs in question. RegMech will flag all the incorrect entries in the reg (which used to be good until you moved the programs) and ask to delete them. Not the way to go. Now, some pograms may work correctly if they are moved, but its a trial and error kind of thing. To be safe, i would uninstall/reinstall everything. ~Rich
First of all...thank you for replying. Yep, I started to realize that after I started the thread. I guess I just need to ge my thoughts down before I could really think about it. I think I have a new plan of action now. I will backup a copy of certain program files. Then, I will uninstall those which I plan to move. I will then place my original program folders on the new external hard drive and reinstall over them. Maybe that way I can keep some of my settings on those programs instead of redoing them....
