Hello, I have a Gateway lap top, it came with a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW. The original firmware version was 1.02 with region code restricted by a counter. I found an upgrade and now I'm using the 1.03. The difference between the two version was that one show explicit the +- (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4040N vs HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA4040N). Well that's not really the problem (just wanted to explain the all the variables).

I'm able to burn CD's at 16X wuth no problems. The problem was that I can't burn DVD's. I'm using pleomax 8X DVD-R form Samsung.
This is the information that I got using Nero InfoTool about a blank DVD:

    Layers: 2
    Supported Speeds: 2.0X
    Blanck capacity: 4.38GB
    Manufacturer ID: OPTODISCR008
    Copy protection: n/a

This has been the brand that I have purchased from a year now. But I don't know why the new ones I bought are not good anymore. I also tried with Imation DVD+R and Verbatim DVD-R. The DVD trayled starts to blinck, after few seconds stops and then the process dies :( I remember that the process was more o less the same, but after the lights turned off, it re-starts blinkink and burning withou any further problems.

Some times the drive produces coasters, the DVD shows that no session was burned, but the space availible is 0. Both the simulation and write processes fail.

I also have defrag my disk with Norton and another software named VoptXP to ensure I have plenty of contiguos space.

What do you suggest ohh mighty DVD gods :)!!!

I enclose my log file from my last try.

    chorchas hi :)

newest firmware is 1.04 get from here

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

not to good, try some better media

try burning a little faster, about half the max speed, burning too slow can cause as many errors as burning to fast

Thanks for the advice, after work, I went to Office Depot; I bought a Sony DVD-R and a Memorex DVD-R (same problems as in Samsung).

I have seen the 1.04 firmware upgrade from that page before but I haven't tried since the link says it's only for Fujitsu-Siemens drives. When I try to use burn the firmware the program responds with "can't find the drive". I guess it doesn't find the Siemens drive signature os something like it.

I'm thinking this might be a problem with WindowsXP and/or Nero. The problems began after I installed Nero 7.X and then returned to Nero 6 cause' the 7.X version sucks.

I'm thinking on doing a full backup of my PC this weekend and restore the original Gateway image to get it right.

I'll tell you how did it go :)

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi there...

I made a DVD backup using shrink DVD, in the burning process I used a DVD+R and blew up :(

Then, I used nero but with a DVD-R, you won't believe it!!! it worked!!!

I was so happy, I thought everything was fine. After I tryed to burn a DVD-ISO disc with Mp3 files on it, or any other common file does not work :( why is that? I figured that maybe the files were to fragmented or something like it. I made a chache file of all the files to burn, so I have it in one large continous file, but guess what? no luck :(

    Any suggestion DVD Gods?

    Thanks :)
