Judging by that, I THINK that it is a problem with the home made DVD. Does it play fine on your stand alone player and does it play on your DVD ROM?

Try DVD Decrypter. Install it and click Mode->File then rip it to your hard drive. Then Use Nero Burning Rom to burn your back up copy on your hard drive.

It is not copy protected. It was made on DVD pro / mac and I just am trying to copy it on Nero on a pc.

One person suggested: "I think you have do it through Toast or DSP Pro or some program that knows what to do with those VOB files." but this does not make sense to me.

hmmmm.... I did not try the the DVD decryptor because it was named slysoft and it was a pay-product with many products to choose from.

any thoughts??? I also am clearing more space in my drive for the heck of it althought there seemed to be plenty...but maybe that may help.

thanks in advance ye of the brainy dvd types.

It begins making the temp.nrg and consistently reads it to 22% and then starts putting up the errors, what is at 22% consistently that stops the copying and causing an unrecoverable read error?

    argghhh and wah!

    Hi windychip
Yep as Xplorer4 the problem is with the disc you are trying to copy.
You've got tons of read errors (crc). Never even gets the disc ripped.

What brand of media is it on? Might be part of the problem.

Here's a link to the program Xplorer4 mentioned (free BTW)to try & rip this disc.

Hmmm...well it is on a Ridata DVD. Is that bad media? I did download the dvdencryptor and it went to exactly 21% and poopied out again. So it must be on the media? Even though it plays on Standard DVD player and DVD-rom??? hmmm... I can't get it ripped. So perhaps ask for another copy on some other brand of media? Any brand seem the best? Is this normal? It seems a bit mysterious that it plays but does not rip. Anyway--thank you both for your help so far.

Ridata not bad. Better would be Verbatim or made in japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell.

I have a few discs that I get these reads errors on that still play on a player.
When ripping the drive rips ever little byte where a player may just skip over it and you don't notice it.

You can also try iso mode in decrypter and see if that make a diff.
    Go to Tool>Mode>ISO>Read.

You might also need a firmware update. If this is a Dell you have the latest if not the latest is 103C. Here's a link:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2114

    See if that helps any.

Interesting---you are a wealthy of knowledge and hopefully wealthy for it...

Tried the ISO read setting and read failed at the exact same spot 22%.

My computer is a Dell but this dvd drive they sent 3 months ago to replace a bad one I had. Should I trust the firmware is up to date. I am not sure how to check that or if I should still go to that site and try?? You let me know on that one.

Otherwise I am trying to get a new burn on one of the medias you mentioned to see if it is just a flukey burn on a questionable dvd. That would be nice and also creepy...

be well and thanks for your assistance. kh

Yep since this is a Dell your firmware is up to date.

Well the wealthy bit -LOL - I wish - still waiting to hit that lottery:)

On thing I forgot - check the back of the disc you are trying to copy from - may need to be cleaned off w/ something non abrasive -
fingerprints/scratches can stop a rip dead in in tracks.

For your next burn try burning at half the rated speed of the disc - may help next time go to rip it.

Oh and you're welcome on the help!

well...it appears with a newly burned media---I have been able to copy it and am 1/4 the way through burning it...I suppose I should wait for it to complete before claiming victory but I was too excited so...VICTORY!!! You are such a great help with such pieces of nuance in this burning arena. Many thanks and may there be lots of wealth but not too much that you leave afterdawn...hmm...okay. May you have 60 virgins waiting for you in the afterlife...hmmm...perhaps not your thing...okay...a lottery win waiting for you in the afterlife...(afterdawn I guess-which is pre-life...hmmm...so confusing) Anyway--many, many thanks and lavish things upon thee for your works.

    burny burn burnin! kh

Hey this time you got thru the reading/ripping and moved on to the burning part!
Media can make all the difference.

I'll still take the lottery :)

    Happy Burning!
