OK, I've come to the conclusion that my Toshiba DVD burner has died. What's the best one to replace it with?
NEC http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058 BenQ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101010 Pioneer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827129001 The BenQ's go in and out of stock quickly, so you may have to use Google...like I did.
Tigerdirect has the NEC ND-3550A for $19.99 after rebate. It's a great drive. My only quibble is that it doesn't bitset single-layer DVD+R, but you canfix that by using the Liggy's and Dee's firmware from rpc1.org. The Lite-On SHM-160P6S has a good rep, as does the Benq, but the Lite-On can be had for $29.99. I went to compusa and bought my burner. It was made for Compusa by Benq. Model 1650 and got it for 49.95 on sale.
