question about my processor

I have a Dell Optiplex cx100 with an intel celeron processor with only 495 mhz. I am trying to find out how to install a new processor on my computer. I can't find any info on how to install, or what it looks like in my machine ( I know there are a lot of different kinds) some of them plug into the motherboard,and some of the old ones had to be sautered in (is what i'm told) but i have no idea what mine does. Please, any help would be appreciated!

 

well do you know your motherboard name?i cant tell you by taht but one thing 4 sure your motherboard is a old intel celeron and pentium 2 motherboard which means you cant go over a pentium 2 processor about 500mhz evwen if you tried to plug one in pentiium 3 and 4s are usaly flip chips (square ones with 100's of pins) while pentium1/2 and older celerons are cartridge chips,sorry but still need ur motherboard name to tell 4 sure!

 

Well my husband bought the computer for me and I don't know how to tell what my motherborad is. If you can tell me how to get the name of it I would really appreciate it. It sounds like I'm going to have to get a new motherboard though. With a faster processor, do I need a more powerful fan, or maybe another one? Thank you so much for your help so far.

 

if you get a program called cpuz and run it it will tell you in the mainboard tab what brand and model motherboard and you would need better cooling but you get the more powerrfull fan with the cpu if you buy a new one but thats all later now you need to see what name and serial ur motherboard is so you can be sure there isnt anyhting you can upgarde. downlaod cpuz and find the mainboard tab at the top and post back the name and serial or the problem oyu ran into

I hope this tells me what I need, I can't make heads or tails of it! LOL

 

you can upgarde slighly as its a flip chip motherboard that supports up to only 1ghz pentium3/celeron at max if you want to go any higher you will have to buy a new motherboard like an intel i915 or i945 chipsets which support pentium 4 and latest graphics but if oyu want to go to the new core 2 processor i dnt know any motherboards but for the core 2 it is very very pricey!

 

thank you for your help, I feel really clueless when it comes to this, but what would my processor speed be if I upgraded to a pentium 3. right now it is only 495 mhz. if i upgraded to a pentium 3, would my processor be a lot faster? I am converting a movie right now, so I can't restart my computer to check on the asset #, but I will as soon as it finishes. Also, I just installed a bigger hard drive as my slave and when I had my computer open, I was trying to find it but I don't know what it looks like or where it would be located. can you help me with that? I read something that says you have to take the fan off and it will be behind it, but I don't see how.

 

okay, it wasn't on my start up screen, so i went into the bios, and i wasn't really sure where to look for this so i'll tell you what I could find. service tag-GYZ34.....processor ID - 665 ....... is any of that what you need?

 

really a pentium3 is nothing today so i dont really see why to upgrade only to a 1ghz and you wont feel much difference + you can only find pentium 3s on ebay or some other 2nd hand place

That's a fairly complete guide that'll tell you all you need to know about putting it together.

You'll no doubt be able to keep your hard drives and disk drives. Do you have a copy of windows laying around? Any version except 95 will do. '95 has poor CPU support.

You format your hard drives before you install them onto the new motherboard because they won't like it with the old data and different drivers... crash a lot and stuff. Back up your important documents/photos onto a disk first if you wish.

Why not just buy a whole new computer you are anway gonna change everything from the cpu to even the case depending what from atx or micro atx ur motherboard will be, i agree with Estuansis 95 is very poor for cpu support but i dnt even think your 500mhz pc uses it but for a pentium 4 the best is xp especially if your pc is gonna be high tech inside then shabby operating system LOL!

A bit flashy but I use it and it's good and sturdy. It keeps my PC very cool and quiet. Go for it.

From what I can tell you do video work like conversion and such so the setup I have prescribed should do the trick. It'll doo conversions and such in a fifth of the time and feel much zippier in general. Unless you have some proprietary Dell CD drive you should be able to recycle that and the hard drive.

Building your own computer is much cheaper and more fulfilling than buying from OEM dealers like Dell, HP, and Gateway. I have built two of my own and completely rebuilt a Dell Dimension 3000. (To see them check out my user profile)

You'll almost always get something much faster than what you would have gotten from the stores for the same or a lower price.
