    Hi,

I keep seeing in the forums people say their linksys WRT54G router is v2.2 or v5 or whatever. They also say they have upgraded their firmware.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router but cannot find the version number anywhere on the router or the packaging.

When I go to the router's basic setup page under status it say's:
    Firmware Version: v1.00.1, Sep. 20, 2005

So, what's my router version and should I upgrade my firmware, if so, to which one?

I think that's the wrong firmware because it says:
    WRT54GS - Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

    I don't have that router, I have a [bold]WRT54G v.5[/bold] router.
    It doesn't have SpeedBooster.

    Yes, my router is a v5, a WRT54G v5, not a WRT54G[bold]S[/bold].

I found the version number on the bottom of the router.

I need the correct firmware because I don't want to srew up my router.

Yeah, now that's the right one.

But will upgrading the firmware mess up this type of router? I only ask because I've read that upgrading the firmware on WRT54G v5 has completely screwed up people's routers and I don't want that to happen to mine.

Could someone tell me their experience with upgrading router firmware and how to do it correctly or if I should do it at all.

is there a reason you actually need to update the firmware ? as sometimes it's best to leave well alone

As creaky said, if all is well then why upgrade?

I think most of the people having problems with upgrading the firmware, were using 'third-party' upgrades and not Linksys ones. The v5 has half of the flash memory and RAM than v1-4 so most third-party firmware made for the WRT54G didn't account for the v5-v7.

just checked and i have the same exact router (fantastic bit of kit, it's driving up to 5 PC's at the moment). Anyway, i updated the firmware to the version in that link on the day i bought mine, though only because i could!. i didn't need to but i'm au fait with all things firmware so i had no qualms updating but if you're not sure and don't need to, i'd say leave it. Here's the changelog so you can decide if you actually need it -

Ok, I took a chance and upgraded to the version cited in the link above.

Well, everything is okay, and my download speed has improved. Before I upgraded the firmware I did 3 speed tests at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and my speeds were averaged at 950.2 KB/sec and 44 KB/sec. Now that I have the new firmware my speeds are around 1310.4 KB/sec and 44.1 KB/sec! A slight improvement, but I'm happy.

Thanks for your comments and assistance, It helped me immensely!
