I can download films off Morpheus which are AVI files and they will burn onto one CD...why then can I not rip a DVD into an AVI file using software off these pages which will fit onto one CD..can anyone tell me? I would very much like to rip my own films so I can add English subtitles, but when I try it I have to put the film onto two discs..annoying!

Use our DVD to DivX (anamorphic) guide and when you use the bitrate calculator, use the media size of 700MB and you end up having a one DivX file which will fit into one CD. Quality obviously isn't as great as it would be on two-CD version.

Subtitles are normally handled as separate files when speaking of DivX's. Simply do the movie ripping and encoding and later on rip the subtitles using VobSub or SubRip and use virtually any of the hundreds and hundreds of DivX player tools or add-ons to watch the movie with subs (that you can select to use or not to use).

I wouldn't recommend as you're aiming to AVI -- just stick with separate subs as it is MUCH more convenient to have those in separate file.

I use Windows Media Player 6.4 -- it's extremely light without any useless features. That added with FFDShow filter (decodes/opens the DivX clips and takes less CPU power than DivX codec) and DivXG400 (for subtitles) is a pretty good combo. But some people prefer BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer, etcetc..

jarl1: AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI itself is not the tool that will produce the file you need -- it is used in middle to extract the video from VOBs, but there are steps after that still to go.
