I have a lite-on shw-1635s and since i have bought it i have been backin up my games but back-ups never seem to work on my xbox. I have a samsung reader in the xbox. my friend has a pioneer reader i think and all of them seem to work on his. when ever i put a dvd in my xbox that i have backed-up it tells me the drive is empty and status unknown, even with divx films. Can anyone please help with this annoying matter or do i have to go and get a new dvdrw i.e samsung.
    thanx in advance.

Is your backup recognized by your friend's xbox?

Are you using decent quality media and burning at 1/2 or less the rated speed of the media? Is your burner's firmware up to date? What model of burner is it again, the 1633 or the 1653? I'm not familiar with a 1635. Firmware can be found below or at the Lite-On support site:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17

The brand of DVD burner shouldn't make any difference.

    What format are you using?

If using the plus format, are you booktying them to dvd-rom?which Lite-on drives have that capability using a utility.

That x-box is giving you a no disc error. It doesn't recongnize your backups.
Your x-box has a compatability issue with the backups from your Lite-on 1635s-by getting no disc errors. If you're not booktyping, then you'll have a greater chance for no disc errors on your backups on certain drives. Booktyping them usually takes care of that little issue.

Could be media quality but majority of the time it's a format issue.

Datawrite uses a number of different manufacturers for its media, inclusing some really poorer quality ones. It's impossible to say just by looking at the disk who manufactured it. Download DVDIdentifier from the link below and get the media code which will tell who manufactured that particular Datawrite media:

    http://dvdidentifer.cdfreaks.com

DVD Identifier will also indicate the current firmware version for your burner. It'll be a 4 letter combination after the name of the drive/burner.

The most current firmware version for your 1635 burner is version YSOZ available here:

    http://www.liteonamericas.com/twnmain/DOWNLOADS/ODD/SHW-1635S/firmware/DR16YS0Z.zip

    or here:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2141

If you have an older firmware than YSOZ, then download the YSOZ firmware file from one of the links above. Double click the downloaded file to expand the archive and run the extracted EXE flasher program. The program should locate your Liteon burner and ask for confirmation for flashing the new firmware to your drive.

The Liteon booktyping utility can be downloaded here:

    http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=152

Booktyping a +R disk as a DVD-ROM disk only applies to +R media but it can fool a drive into thinking it has a regular pressed DVD and sometime increases playability for some drives. It won't work with -R media which is what you are using now.

You might want to try a +R disk of decent quality such as those made by Taiyo Yuden (available online), Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony (usually Taiyo Yuden manufactured), or Verbatim.

Burning at the slowest speed is sometimes not the best either. A good rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the media if your burner and system supports it. I usually never go below 4X for 8X or 16X rated media.

cmc mag are among the worst quality media and can be troublesome for some burners. I'd definitely burn these at 4X to try to get s good burn.
