How serious do you want to get with the 3-D? How much do you know about it already?

Do you want to model basic polygonal shapes or do you want to create characters? Do you want to create landscapes or do you want to produce animations?

3-D is a huge area and if you are a beginner you may get put off completely if you start with a program that is too complicated to understand. Some are also very expensive, although many companies will let you download a demo version for a trial period.

I suggest you have a look at renderosity.com and see what some of the artists there are creating and see which programs they are using. You might even be able to talk to people there in the forums and get some advice.

I think a good program to start would be Strata, Amapi 3-D or Carrara.

If you want to create characters have a look at Poser. For landscapes you could try Bryce or Vue.

For more professional 3-D you should look at Lightwave, Cinema4D or Maya.
