I would like to upgrade the processor of my sister's computer, but it seems that I am limited on what types or processors I can use. My computer is a Compaq Presario (pretty old, still runs well) with a u-wave motherboard (Socket A / Socket 462) that came with a 750 megahertz AMD Duron processor. Anyways, I talked to an HP tech guy last night and he provided details that the best processor I can upgrade to was an Athlon that ran at 1400 megahertz. So, I did some research on which Athlon processors are suitable for my PC. I came across two different athlons, one being a normal athlon, while the other was an athlon xp. I was wondering what the difference between the two are and if they are compatible for my motherboard. My board's max suppotability is an athlon 1400 megahertz...

    and this one

I was also wondering if this model is compatible and better than the Athlon 1400 I mentioned from above: AMD Athlon SFF 1200

So, bascially, my motherboard supports the Duron and Athlon processors that go up to 1400 megahertz, but am not sure about the Athlon XPs...

    Thanks in advance!

The only reason the limit would be 1400 is if it only supported the old style Athlon CPUs. If it supported any type of XP, whether Palomino, Thoroughbred or Barton, the limit would be 3200+. There may be an updated BIOS for your board that will make it compatible, but I can't guarantee that a) there will be and b) it will work.

    I'd drop about a c-note on an 939 a64 3000+ venice and pcie-x16 motherboard w/on-board video and sound, if I were you.
