    hello.
ok first what internet conection you have?
are you using a router or modem?
beacuse when you plug the cable if it is cnfigurated you internet but if not nothing should happens
some internet connection need tcp/ip settings on your network adepter so it can detect the internet connection usually those settings ip,subnet mask, dns, prefer dns can be obtain by calling your internet provider!!

ok if you have dsl internet you can use your router and in control panel/networks connections/ there you should see your network adapter(networkcard) you right click on it and hit properties then a windows will pop in the middle you should see square box with check marks the last one on the list says tcp/ip you click and properties another windows will pop with with spaces for you to put the ip address, subnetmask, dns etc.. (those numbers should be provided by your internet companies i case of dsl).

if you are using a modem 2 things is it a cable modem or a telephone
but if it uses a network cable it go to be dsl. so in your network card properties setting to obtain automaticly network settings should work. or if you modem has a usb interface you can plug to usb and install it with the modem drivers.
