I hope I posted this in the right place. Anyway, the burner I'm using is a BenQ 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With LightScribe Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model DW1655. Ok so I'm not really an expert on this, so I thought I'd come to those who are! I recently had a nice discussion with some very nice people in this thread here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/394588 Taking their advice I went ahead and ordered myself a 50 stack of Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and a 20 stack of Verbatim DVD+R DL from SuperMediaStore. I've been using the Taiyo Yuden and so far 3/4 discs I've burned have had the burn process fail in the middle turning them into very nice coasters. Now I'm pretty sure I did everything I was supposed to do. I installed Q-Suite, and changed my booktyping to DVD-ROM. I burned the disks at 4x, half their capable speed. I figured everything would go smoothly. I've been burning with this burner for a few months using Office Depot and Imation brand media which isn't nearly as good as the TY and Verbatim and with the Office Depot and Imation I've never had but maybe 1 or two coasters that I can remember. The only thing I can think of is that it could be Nero 6 that's the problem but it's what I've always used. I always heard that it was good software. Does anyone have any other suggestions for DVD burning software other than Nero 6 to use? I'm not even burning the avi files as DVD files, just doing a regular old data burn. Or could it be that I'm doing to many other things while it's running? I just don't know what the deal could be.
You should not multi-task while burning. Your Nero burn log would be a great help in finding other problems (if any). Can you post the log file?
Hey Melissa!When you were using office depot or imation brand medias in the past,you used to run many programs or doing so many things during the burning process same as now when you're using TY medias?Because sometimes when you don't have enough free physical memory available due to multi-tasking,you can have your burn process failed in the middle.Post the log and we'll try to see where the problem comes from.I have only 512MB as memory(it's not that big) and everytime i burn something(movie or data)i just let my pc like this without doing any other thing,just let the maximum of memory available for smooth burning.It's very weird for you to have these kind of problems mostly with TY medias,but post your log,from this we'll see if it's a memory issue or other things.Now it can even be the media in question because sometimes even the best can have some very few bad batches which have been able to slip the quality control,but the risk of that to happen is very small compared to other brands.If it's the case you can claim for a refund or an exchange from where you bought these medias. I would suggest getting media your drive likes, the universal TY's and half speed mantra is not subscribed to by all. One size does[bold] not[/bold] fit all. Here's a review of your drive with a test of Verbatim 16X +R's burned at their[bold] RATED[/bold] speed, with a disc quality score of 97% (and 95% for the -R's). Ok guys here's the log. Btw, I just did another 2 burns this morning. The first was something I hadn't tried burning before and the second was the same thing I failed on twice before. The first one worked and the second one failed. The only thing I can think of with that is that I have multiple Hardrives and with the second one I'm burning files from two different hardrives so maybe it's having trouble accessing two different hardrives or something. Here's one of my scans burned on the 1650(same as the 1655 but without the lightscribe capability)using TY +R media burned at the same rated speed 8x: I don't think it's her burner which doesn't like the TY media,even if it doesn't like the media,it wouldn't fail(3out of 4)in the middle of the burning process.Maybe it's just memory issue or can be a bad batch(which of course is possible even for best brand medias).A log from her failed burn would tell us more about that. I'm not shouting that TY is the one and only best media out there and that everyone should use it,everyone is free to use whatever the media he/she sees is best for himself/herself,but if someone needs advices then of course we people will do our best in sharing the good things we know.It's just TY is definitely not that kind of bad as to make so many failed burns in such a consecutive way.Before i've been using some crap medias but hardly got coasters,the only bad thing i noticed about these crap medias was the bad quality score when i scanned them. Edit:Sorry,i've been busy doing another thing and didn't know that there's already other posts which came.The important point is that DMA should be ON for all drives.That's why when you're burning something from these hard drives it's getting some difficult times in accessing the drives and the burns get failed.Try to enable them and give it a try.Memory seems fine(you actually have 1GB) but try not to multi-task while burning,that doesn't help. Ok went searched a bit through some of the google links for re-enabling DMA, this one here has a nice step by step pictorial... http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html But the problem I'm seeing is that all the guides tell me to go to my "PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL" and "SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL". But when I look under my own IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS tab all I have is... It's gonna have to be your call. Many times we see opticals that have DMA off, but in your case it's everything. I would assume the general efficiency of your computer is impacted. Many folks do prefer XP's native IDE drivers in burning rigs. I'm not familiar with your chipset but I assume there should be a place where you can try to enble DMA first. In Device Manager right click on the Nvidia stuff and choose Properties and see if there's an Advanced setting with the DMA options. Ok I took your advice and posted over at that NVIDIA forum. Here's my post over there... http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=19226 I went through and listed all of my current settings for those NDVIDA drivers that I have under my IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers tab in that post. It seems that I do have DMA enabled to some degree in various forms on several of my drives. But I'm not sure what that means exactly if Nero is telling me it's all off. So I obviously still need to change some settings some where in my device driver properites. Here are how the settings look currently when I go to properties for each of my IDE ATAPI Controllers. They each have tabs for primary and secondary channel. Within these tabs are drop down menus for both master and slave drives where I *should* be able to manipulate my DMA settings. They currently read as the following... ______ NVIDIA CK804 ADMA CONTROLLER (v2.7) Primary Channel Tab: Master: No Device Slave: No Device Secondary Channel Tab: Master: No Device Slave: No Device So these are all blanked out. I'm unable to change any DMA settings. There are also a couple of check boxes including one called "Let BIOS select Transfer mode". The Master drive on the Secondary Controller is my BenQ DVD Burner. The Slave drive on the Secondary Controller is my Plextor CD Burner. These all allow me to change them. All the other options seem to be lower settings than the one already selected. For example the other options for the Secondary Channel Slave Drive are Multi-world DmA 1, Multi-word DMA 0, and POI Mode. _______
Talk about confusing. Maybe you should also take a peek in the BIOS and see if there are any DMA settings there that might apply. Fire up Nero InfoTool and see what the Configuration tab lists. Also check ASPI, checking System and Nero ASPI.
I ran the Nero InfoTool and checked the ASPI tab and there was no System ASPI installed on my system so I moved it to Nero ASPI which gave me a green bar at the bottom instead of a red. Could that have been the problem? I'll reboot and get into BIOS now and see if there's anything in there as well. EDIT: Ok I just went into my BIOS and here are some of the related things I saw in the IDE Function Setup area of my BIOS. Primary Master - PI0 - Auto Primary Slave - PI0 - Auto Primary Master - UDMA - Auto Primary Slave - UDMA - Auto OnChip IDE Channel1 - Enabled (don't this is related) Primary Master - PI0 - Auto Primary Slave - PI0 - Auto Primary Master - UDMA - Auto Primary Slave - UDMA - Auto IDE DMA Transfer Access - Enabled The choices I had for the Primary and Secondary Channels that were PI0 were "Auto" (as shown) and "Mode "1","2","3" or "4". The choices I had for the Primary and Secondary Channels that were UDMA were on "Auto" (as shown) or "Disable"
Not at all, that means that your Nero ASPI is installed and working correctly. XP doesn't need ASPI to operate, but if it is installed and is corrupt there could be problems.

Well either InfoTool is not geared towards your chipset or Nero doesn't see DMA as on (as your Nero log shows) as it isn't listed in Configuration as it is on mine. I really have no more ideas or how you would proceed at this time to fix your burning problem. I do know that DMA off even on the opticals can cause many burning problems and in your case Nero isn't even accessing your HD through DMA. These errors might be a result of this. Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR) HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK) TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND) Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) I also notice you have Nero InCD installed, this can also be a trouble spot, I would uninstall it. Maybe it would be a good idea to completely uninstall Nero and re-install the version recommended here (without InCD).
