Hmm, nothing on my case has damaged me too badly, my Antec 900 is better still though, that's nice and smooth.

Ok. Well i looked at the video on youtube that shows how to assemble the computer. It looks okay to do. However, I am more worried about setting up the computer more than I am of assembling the parts. When all the pieces are put together, do i just put the windows disk into the cd rom and it will run from there. I have never installed or upgraded windows on a computer, so i am not sure of what to expect. I am guessing that even prior to installing windows, there will be many initial installation steps that will be needed after the assembly of the computer.
To clarify, I am in the US, in Pennsylvania to be exact. I would like the computer to be around $1000. $1,200 is just okay, but I really would prefer under that. Also, this price range should include a monitor(19"), which i don't think anybody has included.
Does the case have to cost around $100. Looking on newegg.com, i saw that there are cases for around $40. What is wrong with those?

Nothing much, other than they're not so well made, it's down to personal taste. Just NEVER use a power supply that came with a case, they're pretty much always dire.

As for the windows bit, not really, as long as the PC can see all your devices (which it will assuming they work and you've plugged them in right) then you pop the windows CD in the drive and follow the instructions. That bit's easy.

you need to configure a few things in the bios before loading windows(usually simple stuff) then you just put the cd in and it takes you through the install.

does that include tax? and if so how much tax do you pay there?

Here is my $1150 (no tax) computer (I used canada computers, you will pay less then me when you use newegg):

    Case: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=014670&cid=CS.664 $48.99

    PSU: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=011023&cid=PS.808 $90.99

    Motherboard: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=014629&cid=MB.157 $128.99

    CPU: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=010885&cid=CPU.84 $173.99
(you might want to get a better heatsink if you want great overclocking)

    RAM: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=013889&cid=RAM.835 $139.99

    Graphics: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=013761&cid=999.243.390 $154.99

    Hard drive: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=010282&cid=HD.96 $84.99

    CD/DVD drive: http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=014537&cid=CR.184 $39.99

    OS: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=335878&CatId=672 $120

    LCD: $183.99

    TOTAL: $1166.91

It seems the ULTRA PSU that came with my case seems to be fine, but in general he is right. The case it personal taste ans quality.

Windows is EXTREMELY easy to install and you don't have to install anything before. Your motherboard will come with the drivers CD, but those are pretty much automatic as well. The software is the easier part of an already easy thing to do.

No, my price range does not include tax, which by the way is 6%. I guess is much less than in Canada. I just thought that I guess I would have to pay for the Windows program too which would take I think at least $100 more?

Also, I don't need a HD that is 500GB. 160GB should be fine.

By the way, is it possible to edit a message I have just posted instead of just posting a new message.

hehe, I'm in the UK but I'm more used to Newegg's site than any other! That just shows you how many PCs I've specced up for people here on aD. Just wish I was able to help them out with the other part too.

@sammoris and others, why do you say that if i should get xp instead of vista. i'm just wondering what exactly is so bad with vista. i ask cause i remember how ppl didn't like XP when it came out, but now ppl want xp instead of vista. is it because it is new and working out the kinks, or because of some massive faults in it?

It's mainly for the same reasons as before, but there are plenty of things that don't work properly in it.

Okay. SO after going through the lists that you all gave, here is mixed list of what I got so far for a build:
    CPU: Core 2 Duo E6750 $212
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 $110
is there any other motherboard that is still good, but cheaper?
    Ram: 2x1GB PC6400$76
Power Supply: This is one that was recommendedCorsair 520W $125
However, I found these that have similar wattages, but I don't know if they are good or not. they are almost half the price, that is why i ask.
Antec NeoHE 500 ATX12V 500W this is only 59.99 after rebate
    or this one, KINGWIN ABT-600CW ATX 12V 2.0V 600W $59.99 after rebate
    Hard drive:
I am not so sure about what cache means for harddrives. the first one is 8MB while the second one is 16MB. I assume the higher the better, but do i need 16MB cache?
    Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JS 200GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s $54.99
    Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s $59.99
    HITACHI Deskstar T7K500 HDT725025VLA380 (0A33423) 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s $59.99
    Burner: SAMSUNG Black $29.99
Case: NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $49.99 after rebate
Monitor: is this good? it is cheaper and bigger than those listed earlier, but I don't know if the company is good. SCEPTRE X20WG-1080P Black 20.1" 5ms(GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers $149.99 after rebate

So I don't need a sound card or anything b/c motherboards come with the basic sound card right?

Also, i don't mean to chop at anyone's feet by asking about different products even after you all have given some links, but I just want to go through options that make it cheap.

There's a reason why we put what we do, we're not here to rip you off.
The motherboard is very good, which is why we recommend it, as is the power supply.
The NeoHE power supply isn't so bad, but the Kingwin one is rubbish.
    Stick with the Corsair model.

As for the hard disk, 16MB cache offers a bit better performance, but with that example you're paying more for a smaller hard drive, it's not really worth it.

Sceptre monitors are quite good, and they seem to be getting ever cheaper. You're welcome to use that one.

I am going to go with a self build. Here is what I know I will be getting.
    CPU: Core 2 Duo E6750
    Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
    RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
Case: NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
    Burner: SAMSUNG Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache E-IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner
    Monitor:
SCEPTRE X20WG-1080P Black 20.1" 5ms(GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers

Now for the hard drive, I guess based on past suggestions, it is down to these two options:
Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $74.99
    or
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $69.99
The first has more space, but is 8MB while the second has less space(but enough for me) and is 16 MB.

I bring up power supply I final time (sorry sammoris). I know that you said the Corsair is better than the earlier ones I asked about. I saw that in another thread, there was another power supply that you said would work for the guy/girl asking the question. The person had a similar system to mine, without knowing the exacts of the build. Here is the power supply they asked about:
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU ATX 12V 2.0 500W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CUL, TUV, FCC, and CB certification $44.99
If this is not good for the build I want to do, I will stick with the Corsair you suggested earlier.

For the video card, I am confused with what to get. In my other computer I have a GeForce 7300. I will temporarily put that in the new computer since the old one will no longer really need it. I'll look through the forums and take my time with picking the card.

Also, do I need to get a floppy drive/ card readers? Do I need a floppy drive when I build the computer? If not, I'd rather not get one. (I think I may actually have an old floppy drive somewhere in a box if I do need one.).
In an earlier post, someone listed this item:
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler
What is this and do I really need it?

Can you all please make sure that all of these pieces are compatible with each other. Also, if in the future I wanted to upgrade to Vista, would these pieces allow for that?

Thank you all for your help so far.

Vista will work fine with these components. That motherboard is also very good. Are you going to overclock? The freezer 7 pro is a cpu cooler, I just ordered it and I'll let you know how much the temps drop. Right now my temps are at 40 degrees because I undervolted my CPU, otherwise they are usually at 50. I should have that on Wednesday.

As for the video card try to go for the 8800 GTS if your budget allows, it's not too expensive and delivers a lot of performance.
