    maxtor 320gb sata

I updated the bios to the latest version
I format the disk (1st partition)
I install windows XP on it
    install goes perfect
    after install it reboots
it starts loading windows, then bam

How do you know the drive didnt get damaged when the old mobo went out? If its only a month old, exchange it for a new one. See if that solves the problem. You could also try using only one mem stick, and a bad ship can cause some really odd errors.
