    I compressed the main movie with DVD-RB/HC encoder (best quality setting) first and got a compression ratio of 64%, and then with Nero Recode 2 which gave me the same compression ratio. When watching the two outputs of the same movie, I really couldn't tell any difference in the quality. It was too bad at that high compression from both softwares.

    Can anyone explain this? I have read a lot about how outstanding DVD-RB is, so I thought I had to give it a try. But now I am a bit disappointed that DVD-RB didn't perform any better than Recode although it took about 6 times longer to encode the movie.

    Thanks!

    Anything below 70% compression quality (even on different programs) is quite visible on big screens. I find that if you have to compress a lot, DVDXCopy yields the best results. Of course, you can always use 8.5GB double layer disc to preserve the original picture quality.

    rebuilder lovers will let you have it the momment you say that a transcoder(recode2 is one)give as good or closed quality output as rebuilder/encoder. i'm not ready to say that recode2 is better or iqual to RB/encoder but, i have seen what recode2 can do, i'm a recode2 lover and i can tell you, that unless youn have a very very big screen tv, recode2'quality output is so so good that, at times, looks iqual as that of RB/encoder. People. Recode2 is simply, in terms of quality output, the best trancoder outthere. by the way. there is a thread on the cdfreaks forum, the guy who started and many other say that recode2 is as good as RB/encoder.

    With 64% quality or ratio meaning there's only 36% compressions needed, so if using Nero Recode via "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie", the end results quality will be close to DVD-RB + HC.

    However, if you're encoding LOTR or KING KONG or any 3 hrs movie with 50% quality ratio, meaning 50% or higher compressions needed, then DVD-RB + CCE SP 2.70 or ProCoder2 will top Nero Recode.

    @Kevin726

    Your on crack if you bealieve that.

    I have a 67in HDTV and can see a little diffrence between Recode2 and DVD-RB+CCE on DVD's that do not need much compression.

    But when it comes to larger disc like Episode DVD's the diffence between the 2 programs is night and day. DVD-RB+CCE having the best results.

    So, if I'm going to compress say 40-50% or more, DVD-RB is the answer, and when using less compression I can stick with Recode 2 and don't miss very much of the quality compared to DVD-RB!?

    That's good news since DVD-RB used about six hours to compress the movie in my little test, and Recode 2 only one hour with all the settings set to best possible quality.

    Thanks again!

    With low compression, you won't see much difference. But do an action movie or a very large movie and the difference is amazing especially on a large tv.

    Yes, that's right. To make a long story short, if you open up Nero Recode 2 and imported your movie and you get the following Video Quality % ratio:

    If it showed anything from 60% - 75% on the Quality, then it means that it needs 40% - 25% of compressions needed to be transcoded, so this should be good to go (transcode) via Nero Recode with "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie".

    If it showed anything from 75% - and higher on the quality, then it means that it's only 25% or lower of compressions needed, so this should be good to transcode via Nero Recode with "Advanced Analysis + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie". Though, I highly recommend using "HQSR" + the other two as well.

    If it showed anything from 60% - 50% or lower on the quality, then it means that it needs a lot of comressions (i.e. 40% - 50% or higher), then your best choice is to go w DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 or ProCoder 2 or HC.

    Again, for any movies with 2 1/2 hrs -> 3 hrs (i.e. LOTR, King Kong, STAR WARS, HEAT, Scarface, etc.), I highly recommend DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 or ProCoder 2. However, the choice is yours.

    Good luck to all.

    quote"DVD-RB vs Nero Recode 2, No difference???"
    i don't agree with the statement/question but, it is a testament of what the great Recode2 can do.

    I am a big fan of Recode2, but I was always a super fan of Shrink. I think they said it best....if you get into your movie needing super compression ratio's then use rebuilder, but almost every movie I do is Recode2. Special occasions I use Re Builder with ProCoder2.....hey can't beat the quality, but everyone has to make their own mind up.

    D
    PS use rebuilder a couple of times to get the hang of it.

    Being a dvd-rb/cce fanboy I'd like to add but everythings already been said. I use rb/cce for everything since if there is little compression needed it won't take very long anyway. You can't get worse quality using rb/cce (encoder) vs a transcoder. You can get worse quality using a transcoder vs rb/cce (encoder). Time is of no concern to me when it comes to quality.

    I have had RB for about a week. I love it. I have been a big fan of the AnyDVD CloneDVD2 combo and used it almost exclusively, with the occassional use of DVDdecrypter, DVDShrink, and imgburn. I think they make fantastic backups.

    I have been using RB for my last 8 or so backups and find the process very interesting and enjoyable. I will be doing some episodals in the next couple of weeks and wonder if RB will work as well for those as CloneDVD2 does. Clones ability to preserve the menu's is excellent.

    I think that for the most part I will be a RB user for a long time. I have the CCE Basic encoder package. I don't know that I could justify the expense for the other CCE sp's.

    Cheers.

    @9mmruger1

    I think you will be pleased when viewing the results of doing Episode DVD's. This is where DVD-RB+CCE really makes a diffrence. Hope to see some of your opinions on them after you have backed them up.

    @larrylje

    Thanks, Will probably have some opinions first of the week. Menu's and all will work I presume. Can't wait.
