    Hey guys,
I am using norton internet security 2006 and was wondering if it was worth installing a firewall as well?

    Thanks
    joe.

Yes it is always good to have a firewall. The firewall that comes with XP OS is not very good. Of course, I don't like Norton either! I prefer the AVG Free version.

Different people like different things, but I hang out on forums with some of the best computer techs. I am good, but I learn a lot from them. Most of them agree that Norton does not find everything, and the same goes for McAfee.

Now there are some that like Norton, and swear by it until I have to fix there machine with a online scan from trend micro. Most people that have AVG Free notice that if they download something that AVG will display it as a threat and ask it you want to keep or remove it.

If you want to use Norton than you are more than welcome to, however, if you would rather use AVG you will need to clean your system of Norton. That means cleaning the registry manually. This is not time consuming, but if you have never done it I can talk you through the steps. Norton puts all kinds of registry entries in your registry. Let me know if you wish to remove it.

If you are looking for a good free firewall I know a couple. Let me know what you decide. Like I said some people will agree with me. Some will not agree. Some love Norton, some love McAfee to each his own.

I'll agree to that. The only good thing that Symantec makes is Norton Firewall. :)

Norton's is garbage, but it should include a firewall, so you don't need to install another one. It's rarely good to have more than one firewall running.

Norton's is a resource hog, it's AV frequently misses threats, and it's script control is horrible. There are much better all-in-one suites out there, although it is usually best to get all separate components and most are free. The best firewall is Comodo, though Kerio is good too, the best AV is either AVG, Avira Anti-vir, Avast, or NOD32 (payware), and if you want a script filter, Proxomitron. All of these except NOD32 and some versions of Kerio is free, no less.

I am running Norton Inernet Security. It's a resource hog. The virus program works well and the Firewall seems to be protecting my pc. I'm no expert but have been using it for 2 years now and Norton Antivirus before with no problems. Ask Ireland, I thinks he loves NIS. Until something crashes my machine I'll not worry. I do no financial dealings on this pc. JM2C

Edit: @Dunker NIS does include a firewall!

    Thanks guys,
I think i'll carry on using norton until my subscription expires.
I always used to use AVG but wasnt sure if it was good,(being free) as im not exactly a computer pro. But yeah NIS does seem to use a lot of resources.
I have a prety much new computer and it has crashed on a couple of occasions already, could norton have anything to do with this?
    Maybe stupid question :)
    thanks agen.

kaspersky anti-virus was voted best anti-virus program and i don't have any problems because it's unhackable but it does take alot of ressources.it's not that expensive either.costs less than norton, which sucks major ***** :p

norton could be part of the problem, such as not blocking the infection

yes you could BUT don't leave 2 anti virse programs on your PC ,they will conflit and cause problems

actually the best thing to do is go to the Trend Micro website and run "Housecalls" its a free online scanner thats very good

i use the "Trend Micro Internet Security 2007" and its a very good program.
    heres that link

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

i think norton is one of the worst programs ever a couple other thinks you should do is run a AV program in safe mode along with running "Spysweeper" in safe mode.

also run "SmithfaurdFix"v2.106 and post a logfile along with a hjt logfile

    @joey89

Are you actually having a problem or just asking about NIS?
