The 12V rail shouldn't be any different with a new board unless one of them had a dodgy sensor (when reported correctly, I very rarely see voltage sensors not work), it'll be the CPU and memory voltage you want to keep an eye on.

Well...apparently I saved 6 minutes by OC'ing from 3.0 - 3.5Ghz. Which appears to utilize not much more than 2 cores. 50-60& cpu utilization on average. First encode 38 minutes, second encode 32 minutes. I doubt that 3.7 is gonna give me much more improvement. Thats with Iso creation by the way :D which should only be around 1.5 - 2 minutes. But...lets just see how far I can take this "SAFELY" LOL!
I dont know what to say sam. On the other board, it was typical during Prime 95 to see the 12v rail dip down to 11.90 - 11.99V. During the Cpu stability test, it never dropped below 12.12! And looked like it was averaging more like 12.19v. So a sensor could be the trouble on the other board?

Looks like im hitting a similar instance where only 75% of the CPU is utilized. Im currently at 1.425V (3.708Ghz). I'll bump it up to 1.45V and see what happens.

1.45V 3.708Ghz. Non stable. Bsod(Black screen crash) in 15 seconds. But at least this time it utilized all cores. Im wondering at this point if 4 sticks of ram is whats causing it. Or if bumping the Northbridge frequency up would help. Its currently running at 1854Mhz. Well below the theoretical optimal of 2.0Ghz.

Yeah you might want to up the HTT and NB a single notch. Both of them need to be the same speed AFAIK. Around 2000MHz is optimal, but when you stabilize your OC, you might try getting it up over 2.2GHz.
Try using two sticks of RAM too. 4 sticks could certainly harm OCing a bit.

Darn it! I bumped both North bridge and HT link to 2.0Ghz. No Fsb bump. Stock 200Mhz. And virtually no change. Its as if I changed nothing. Probably has to do with having 4 sticks of ram then. Man...I really want/need 8Gb dang it. And 4gb sticks are still too expensive. I suppose its possible that its my bin too. Perhaps my cpu is simply seeing its max eh. 3.5-3.6 is nothing to sneer at. Ah well. Enough for today. Time to play some games :D

Well...bumping my HT link/North bridge to 2Ghz saved me a whole 1/10th seconds in super pi (1M)

What a shame a board won't/doesnt allow deactivating certain slots of ram. Be much more convenient when troubleshooting, to deactivate banks 3 and 4 (or 2 and 3) which ever the case may be. Perhaps at some point in the future. But then, perhaps we won't need to in the near future LOL!

hi all, first timer ... iam r unning a athlon64 6400+ windsor on a gigabyte ga-ma790x ds4 with 4gig xms2 corsair ram pc 6400, vista hp 64bit, 9800gt oc 1gig graghics, auzentech meridian 7.1 sound, with gigabyte rocket 3d cooler, in a gigabyte aurura3d case, i am an amateur tinkerer and this is the system i have ended up with so far, my reason for postting is for advice on gettung this machine runnig better, i am am not disapointed, i just feel there is a lot more potential here , i am after some advice on o'cing with this board and processor, it is currently running at 3.2 stock , with the ram at 4-4-4-12 at 2.10v if this helps at all also i have a 750gig samsung hdd sata dual boot with 32 bit xp. i am mainly a gamer but wish to broaden my horizons...any advice would be muchly appreciated

Unfortunately you need to be very careful and slow with those CPUs, they barely overclock at all. Nudge it up a few mhz at a time, but be prepared to raise the voltage a fair amount to get anywhere.

so leave prety much alone you say, thanks for advice. am thinking of buying phennom 4 940 be this is a am3 socket bout is compatible with my am2+ socket. is this correct

No, the 940 is an AM2+ CPU, and will work fine with an AM2+ board assuming it supports that level of power consumption.

The Phenom II x4 940BE will work in your motherboard without power issues. It's a 140w board!

Oh yeah my system is fully AM2+ with DDR2 and I use a 940. As long as you have a decent motherboard it's not a problem. Your 790X board should work fine.

great , thanks for replys,i also have athlon 6000+ runing on a gigabyte ga-ma78sm-s2h with a gigabyte 3870 512mb gpu, i actually have 2 3870's as i was runining x-fire on the 790x but got sick of sacrificing the pci slot due to the fans, i now have win 1300 mce tuner in that pci slot wich runs great,anywho i have a zalman am2 9500 cooler on th cpu, i only have 2 gig of generic corsair pc5300, what can i expect with this set up , oh its also vista hp 64bit. any advice would be welcome on improving this system would be very welcome

The 6000+ isn't a very good CPU for overclocking, so you will be looking at relatively minimal gains, perhaps 200-300mhz. The motherboard you have isn't especially great for overclocking, but it should still allow you to bump the speed up a little bit. The slow RAM will harm performance overall, but shouldn't impact overclocking too much.

The S2H is a particularly old 780 board so I generally wouldn't recommend a high OC with it. Same with the RAM, it is fairly slow but I'm not sure if it would hinder you or not. It depends a lot on what multipliers the system works out to. I had one friend whose system was actually a LOT faster with his 800MHz RAM at 667 with tightened timings.
My best advice is to leave the older/slower system stock and focus on improving the faster one. It is newer, has better hardware, and will be more receptive to overclocks and newer hardware.

well i don't mean to throw a INTEL Cpu in among all the AMD'ers. lol
but i figured it would be best to post all my OC stuff here instead of the build thread seeing im done with the building part..lol
took it up to 3.7ghz from the 3.6ghz. next to minimal increase in vcore. from 1.265v up to 1.275v everything is running so smooth. i am about at the limit with this mem crucial ddr2 800. running ar 872mhz
running OCCT right now 35mins left on the 1hr test. will run Prime95 next then sandra. shooting for that 70,000mips mark..lol

Change the memory setting to 667 memory and keep on cranking. You might just be able to get the memory to run right at 800 at a higher overclock. It can't hurt to try!

russ - he's already at the FSB limit for his memory. The lowest memory multiplier is 2.0x and he's running at nearly 440FSB to reach 3.7Ghz.

My bad! I've been looking at too many AMD boards! LOL!! I'm pretty sure you can set the memory on those to 3.33, which would be 667MHz! Then again, you can't raise the FSB that much on an AMD anyway!

No, it,s 3.33 times the FSB which is 200 for 666 or 667 memory. Since the fsb can't be raised very much it's sort of an ideal solution. The multi's are 2.00, 2.66, 3.33, 4.00 and 5.33 for 400, 533, 667, 800 and 1066 memory! Mine is set at 5.33 for 1066, but if I had 800 memory in it I could set it to 3.33 and it will be locked until it reaches that point and then goes up with the overclock, even with just the multiplier. I'm not sure I fully understand that, but in real life, that's how it works. My best guess is that the theoretical FSB has something to do with that. All I know is that if I set it to 5.33, anything above the 16x CPU Multiplier raises the memory speed as well!

it is for AMDs - there's a 3.33x with Intels as well, but clearly, in most systems that's a hell of a lot faster than 667mhz (the exception of course being the E5 series which also uses 200FSB)
since there's no reason to raise the FSB with most AMD CPUs, it makes perfect sense for the multipliers to be laid out for the exact speeds you find memory in. Raising the multiplier has a knock-on effect with the FSB as well at some stage - experimenting with what speed the memory ends up running at would probably tell you what that relationship is.
