Ok so i have a 2 pentium ii slots with 300mhz each, im looking to upgrade to pentium 4 with 2ghz and i was wondering if it would go in the same slot, from what ive seen it wont and i was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on where to go from here. i have more than enough ram, and im looking to use it for games.

    Thanks

ok 1st it wont fit since the slots r different and the motherboard wont support a p4 speed

so to use the p4 u need a new motherboard another power suppply new ram and a new video card if u havent bought the pentium 4 i would buy one of those intel core 2 duo also what games do u plan to play?

If you mean Slot 1, no. You might not be able to upgrade them with 500 MHz chips let alone P4s.

P4s are a world apart. They need fan cooling, a different socket, even their own separate power supply in the form of a 4-pin plug, meaning you can't even reuse your old power supply.

Thanks guys, I was thinking of mostly roms, and diablo 3 when it comes out, so i should get a new motherboard and transfer all my RAM and video card. Then i would need a new psu (if im correct) because mine is too old. my question is which motherboard should i get, and can someone reccomend a tutorial site for how to put the motherboard in the case? anything else i need? Thanks again

I'd go with a much larger power supply (>400W at least) and a DVD burner, but otherwise that's a good price if you're on a budget. Consider also:

    Pentium 805 about $90
GIGABYTE GA-8I945GZME-RH motherboard about $58 w/ integrated graphics
    Corsair DDR2 512Mb $57
NEC ND-3550a DVD burner $20 after rebate at Tigerdirect.com
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3250824AS 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $75
    Powmax CP769PL ATX Mid-Tower Case w/ 400Watt PS $30 at Tigerdirect

This comes in about $30 more but with a faster 250 Gb hard drive, DVD drive, and faster, dual-core CPU rather than a Celeron.

You can get an XFX GeForce 6200/128MB PCI-E card for $45 at tigerdirect and an extra stick of memory, which is the only upgrade to the this system I would make if I were buying it. BTW, you apparently can overclock that 805 to 4 GHz, though I wouldn't go nearly that far.

ram, no as it is sdram with 2 key notches on bottom whereas new boards use either ddr ram with 1 notch or ddr2 ram. what videocard is that as i presume is an agp slot card?

Your old pc uses SD-Ram Most likely PC100 seeing the FSB on the P2 is 100mhz or 66mhz not 133mhz you will need new ram no matter what unless you break the slot showing it in and then turning it on and noticing smoke comming out, I doubt you will go for the 2nd option so you only have one left buy new ram the ram aint very expensive 79au here for 512mb DDR1

bios is the permanent memory of the motherboard. it is the os that you will have to install plus all your other programs. what size is your current hd?

pretty well yes if you have loaded an os before. just follow what it asks & don't put a password in if you don't need one.
