Wifi ADSL Router Recommendations

I've posted previously about my enable/disable Wireless problems with my Belkin ADSL Router. Most posters seem to recommend a Linksys replacement, and Linksys recommend the WAG200G - they say that there are no known problems with the enable/disable functionality although it is only 54 speed. Is this the best I can get without trading-off reliability (as enable/disable is a priority for me over the range/speed, I know that this might be a trade-off I will have to make)? Can any of you recommend a any good, fast, ADSL wireless router (pref MIMO) which has a fully functioning enable/disable wireless functionality?

 

Most wireless routers I've encountered have some mechanism to disable the wireless component, if that's what you're talking about e.g. Netgear, though Netgears tend to be unreliable. The best thing to do is go to a manufacturer's website and download the manual for the product of interest.

 

Thanks for that. I've contacted Linksys (super service, I hope it continues to be as good) and they state that there is no known problem with their WAG300N so I've ordered one of those.

 

My D-Link router has mechanical wireless enable/disable, you have to unscrew the bloody aerial LOL true.

Yes, and the trouble with that is that as I will have to enable/disable at least once a day, there will inevitably come a time when I damage the thread or lose the aerial!

 

I'm hearing you Binkie, I lost my aerial for a couple of days, it had rolled under the cabinet and the "handbrake" (wife) tried to suck it up in the vaccuum cleaner.

Most routers have an option in the configuration to simply disable the wireless component. Of course, you have to reset the router or use Ethernet to re-enable wireless capability. For example, Dlink has "emulators" on its site that let you do a virtual tour of the product. On the link below, you can simply click "Disable" on "Wireless Radio" to disable wireless functionality.

It's inconvenient, sure, but if your plan is to disable wireless functionality for security reasons, don't go wireless to begin with.

 

Thanks for that - no it isn't just for security, although that is a factor of course. It is mainly because of interference with another item which is for use by someone with learning difficulties who could not master the art of enable/disable himself so I needed one which I could enable/disable reliably myself for him once a day. When he is not using the PC (which is most of the time), I can enjoy the wireless function. I can put up with a bit of inconvenience as long as I can enable/disable wireless!

I got to thinking about how lame the DLink DI-524 router is with the unscrew aerial shite. I went to the DLink site and downloaded the latest firmware, GUESS WHAT!!!!! You guessed it enable/disable wireless switch. WOOOO HOOO.

I've got the d-link di-624, it has the enable/disable feature you seek and I've gotten really good service with it for over a year now. I like d-link, simple to setup and easy on the pocket book.

If the OP is in the States then look for a sale on their combo pack of router and wireless card with their G speed option. I got the combo for about 5 bucks more then most places wanted for the router alone.
