Hello, not sure if i'm in the right foruum or not, sorry if i'm not. I'm trying to do some research on the above named site. Searched here & on the web with not very much luck. I was hoping the site had testimoneals on user feedback or mabe even a free trial. My questions are, do they supply the newest releases when it comes to movies, quality ect. Also can i burn to disc or what. I quess what i'm trying to do is avoid going to the video stores or not being able to get the movie i went there to get. Wondering if anyone has bought this program & is it worth it. Do i need special software to get it to disc? Any information i could get would be very helpful. I was thinking about buying the program, but i'm not exactley sure.
    Thanks in advance

Some files contained on these networks are copyrighted works, like popular games, movies, music, and software. P2P software makes it possible to upload and download copyrighted material from the Internet without proper authorization, but that can violate copyright laws and subject you to criminal and civil penalties. Click here for information on how to minimize copyright infringement using p2p applications. For all others, please consult the user guide provided with the application.

    Data Security
P2P software allows any user to access the files you place or move into your shared folder. If you're not careful, files containing your personal and confidential information could inadvertently be uploaded for distribution on the Internet. This could cause a number of problems, including identity theft. We strongly suggest purchasing one of the major spyware applications available or visit our bonus software section for a free version.

    Pornography
Files downloaded from the Internet using P2P software could contain pornographic material. These files may be mislabeled with seemingly innocent names. This can result in users, including children, being inadvertently exposed to pornography. Redistributing files containing child pornography or obscene content can be a crime.

    Spyware
Files downloaded from the Internet using P2P software may contain spyware that can track your online activity, control your computer, or harm its operation. These files typically are disguised and can go undetected. We strongly suggest purchasing one of the major spyware applications available or visit our members section for a free version.

Files downloaded from the Internet using P2P software may carry computer viruses, worms, or Trojans that can damage your computer or cause other problems. These files typically are mislabeled to disguise their true purpose. We strongly suggest purchasing one of the major anti-virus applications such as Norton and Mcafee.

Don't be such a condescending geek. All they were asking for is if anyone had joined the site. I am sure you are thouroghly impressed by your mastery of the internet and all things related to computers but give the normal people who have a life a polite answer. I am sure you live for myspace and haven't had a live person in your life besides your mother, whom you still live with ever. Just reply with a simple answer, watch your complete star trek collection and go satisfy yourself to your recently arrived life subscription to Man Love magazine.

    Hi rdmercer1 and all,

I am learning about the p2p filesharing, know only the basic concepts, and have also been looking into the Butterfly Download Network. (At which I did read the user agreement as well as some links they provide to the Electronic Frontier Foundation's notes on the legalities of P2P in general.) I'd like to ask you a handfull of questions.

First, in general, are these paid filesharing networks like Butterfly basically go-betweens between people who have files and people who want their files? If so, how? Is it like, you have Movie X in your shared files folder and I want it, and Butterfly somehow points me to you and I get it directly from your computer? Or do you upload Movie X to the network, and I get it from there, like on You Tube? Is there any difference, in terms of security, quality, etc?

You said that it is "nothing more" than a paid filesharing network. What is bad about this? Is it because there are places to get movie/TV show files for free elsewhere? If so where? :) It seems to me that for a novice like myself, paying a one time fee could be worth it to access a database of titles without searching all over the net for what I want. Or am I out of the loop? ...Or is it because Butterfly is likely to be under the movie industry's scrutiny and its members more at risk of being sued? ...Or maybe it's the junk email thing. It does read to me though, in their users agreement, that a user can, one, not answer their marketing emails and two, opt to stop receiving it. I'm not *entirely* clear this would stop *all* ads from connected companies --it doesn't actually say that. Supposedly I could do both one and two, and still get random email ads.

Last, if all these networks are doing is linking individuals with files, then the quality of the files and their download speeds will really vary, right? Just like out in the net at large. I see how Butterfly makes no claims to the speed etc.

when you are asking about that service like i said it is nothing more thain a paid fileshareing service, and you can still be sued for downloading copyrite protected files, so if you are going to do this why pay for it, there are plenty of free one's out there, and if you want to know where just google a search for fileshareing programs and you will find a whole bunch of them, the best way to get what you want and be legile, there are plenty of pay per download services, just one that hit the sean the other day is walmart.com and theese are manly for movies, they will have new movies for download the same day they come to video stores, and it is totaly legit, they have a deal with the movie studios to do this, so the best thing i can say is do the right thing no one likes a thief, good luck

    Well Nigel,

The answer to your filesharing question is this. Filesharing is pretty cool and it gives you access to tons of movies and music. But you are putting your computer at risk. Files that you obtain could have viruses in them or software that watches what you do on your computer. Then the files that you begin sharing with others may contain your personal information. So unless you have prentative software on your computer you are putting your computer at risk. Now there is software out there that allows you to burn dvds that you already own. DVD cloner IV lets you make back up copies of your dvds on your computer.

the problems with the type of filesharing pay versions,is you are doing copyrite violation if you were to get caught with one of theese disks you would get sued, if you have the files in your shared folder or any where on your system you will get sued just because you paid for this service dose not meen that you have the right to the media that you got using this program, so if you want to take the chance of geting caught by all meens go for it, we might see your name in the newspaper for geting busted for downloading copyright protected movies and such, good luck, also if you want that movie just go out and buy the movie that way you will have a leg to stand on, and most cases end up seteling out of court for an adverage of $3000,00 and for that price you can buy a whole bunch of dvds.

Thanks rdmercer1 and Klae, for your informative feedbacks about Butterfly and filesharing in general. Well, I'm not really up for endagering my computer ...or finances. It seemed too good to be true, so it is. A friend recently mentioned that netflix has started a subscription download service, like walmart's. I'll look into these kinds.

I was also looking at purchasing the butterfly program and get some TV shows that are not available on DVDs. According to the posts here it seems like nothing they are doing is legal so how can they operate as a legal company? I really thought if I paid for something it would be legal.

Also is there anyone here who has downloaded movies from the net using butterfly or any other (paid or free) programs? I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell me from personal experience.
    Thanks

Don't ever pay for one of these programs to download copyrighted material unless it's something like Walmart, Netflix, etc or Newsgroups, there are plenty of freeware programs out there. I never heard of Butterfly but most of these programs only instruct you on how to download and don't actually host any material or may be based offshore or in some country where it's not illegal. Malaware is a fact but in three years of downloading hundreds of files, I've never been infected and being sued in a country that recognizes US (mainly) copyright is a possibility; the MPAA and RIAA have companies spying on your downloading that report back to them. They caught me a couple of years ago, contacting my ISP for info on me but as I'm in Canada, it ended there. A program like Peer Guardian will help but isn't 100%. Anyway, it's not so much your downloading but your uploading to others with some of the programs that causes problems; you're distributing copyrighted material that way. Bottom line, if I was in a country that recognized American copyright, I wouldn't download if I had to upload, not sure if this affects Newsgroups where you don't upload.

thanks for bringing that to my attention as I'm very new to the whole filesharing notion. Im in Australia & imagine copyrights law would be the same. Uploading aspect didn't even occur to me! D'oh @ myself.

The only reason I was considering butterfly is because I saw them getting the highest rating on the consumerguides website. Putting a "con" in the consumers. Thanks for the link to the complaintsboard. I'm adding that to my favourites.
