I have updated the firmware on my Sony DRX 500UL. Now the data light on the front flashes constantly and I can't open the tray. Has anyone else had this problem and know a fix?

That sucks dude. Maybe you just fried your drive. Did you follow their instructions? I believe they ask you to remove all burning apps and some intel accelerator app (if it is on your comp).

If I were you I would send it back and get another one, if you are within the 30 or so days from date of purchase.

Stick with the firmware it comes with unless you have major probs.

Happened to me too. I did the 2.0f firmware update, and fried it. First it started to not close out a DVD after burning, forcing me to reboot the computer as the drive wouldn't open the door. Then it wouldn't read any DVDs that were put in there, but would write them (with the problem about locking up after the write). Then finally it wouldn't write them.

Frustrating! I'm sending it back to Sony for repair, and in the interrim bought a Pioneer A05, only to find out that although it burns just fine and plays the DVDs that it burns fine on my computer, when I take them to my DVD Player on my TV set, it won't recognize them.

So back to the store I go, and swapped it for a Sony DRU510 unit. Fingers crossed that I'm back in the burning business again. I'm testing it right now, and praying....
