    UMS = USB mass storage
    meaning when you connect the player to the computer it acts as an external hard drive / flash drive (a drive letter will be displayed instead of the player name).

    And the reason i call creative crappy is because even though they have a UMS mode it needs a separate partition. So for example when you decide to transfer music via UMS mode and you want to play it back on the player.. OH NO YOU CAN'T! Because the songs you 'sync' using their useless software is on a different partition.

    Most the time UMS mode transfer data/audio files faster than some 3rd party programs they force you to use. iTunes for example is just a waste of space on your computer and uses more RAM than needed when you want to 'sync' audio.
    in UMS all you have to do is drag and drop.

    the only players I know of that has a full UMS mode (assuming its not a flash player) is the iAudios and the iRivers. and I think some older archos players but they stopped making them.

    The 'crappy creative' is fully UMS compatible now. I own it (the Zen Vision: M) and the UMS works great. It even plays DivX when you add it through UMS. This is very handy when wanting to add a single video file (I use it to add downloaded TV shows) instead of having to tell your software to do it. And it is very fast. I had a Zune for a few days before I got my Vision: M, it does not support UMS. Go for creative.
