I decided to clean up my Lacie 160 GB (lost the paperwork with the other specs) external HD. I deleted a bunch of files that I dont use and then I defragmented the drive. Now I am unable to access it. When I try I get a message saying the drive is not formatted. However, device manager does not detect a problem and the device status says it is functioning properly. Any ideas? I would just try to reformat it but that would require losing everything I have on there.

Try to use an application such as Recover My Files: http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

See if you can recover what's on there now before reformatting. Usually, with public avaialable programs such as this one...if the sector of the disk you are trying to recover from has not be written over where the fle was/is...the file(s) can be recovered.

After that, I'd reformat it, start fresh, and transfer over your recovered files. If it's not too late, I'd recommend taking it back and getting a different brand or just creating your own external hdd. I haven't heard too many good things about them when it comes to stability.
