Hey guys, Ive got an issue with my graphics card.

Basically, I have just upgraded my system. Im running a P4 3.0Ghz, 2.5Ghz RAM, ATI X1950 Pro.

The problem is when I play games, I set all the eye candy to max and start playing. A few minutes in my monitor goes black and enters power save mode. Sound still comes through my speakers for bout another 20 seconds before the system crashes and I have to reboot from the power source.

During this time my monitor is in power save mode, my graphics card fan starts spinning really fast and loud, so im kinda worried im killing it!

Any ideas whats happening? All drivers are up to date and Ive already been out and bought a new powerpack to ensure I was feeding the card enough, but still happens.

I have also tired turning all the eye candy off, but still :(

The game in question is made by Ubisoft and I have tried another one of their games and it also happened. However, I have yet to try other games to see if this is software releated.

Please help any way you can!

sounds like your new grphics card needs even more power.

whats your new psu rated at?

if not that, hows your case for ventilation? p4's run hot and x1950's more so. i use speedfan to monitor my board temps, everest ultimate edition is aslo highly rated. you driver should give you the gcard temps.

Thanks for the reply, I am experimenting with PSU's. I bought a 500 watt PSU today, and still had troubles.

Had a look and came acorss support that said the x1950 needs 30A on the 12 Volt rail to run and my new PSU was only giving 20A on that rail. Soo, I guess im going to have to return it tomorrow and get a new one.

Do you think this should fix the issue? Cooling should be fine, I got dual fans in my PSU and the X1950 fan seems to do a decent job.

go with a brand name for your psu that meets your requirements and that should fix it.

cooler componants are more stable. if you can fit fans in your case i think you should and the bigger the better, and quieter. having all the hot air in your case being expelled through your psu is not good for your psu.

    Thanks again for the reply.

Do you have any recommendations for the PSU?

Also, with everything inside the tower, im not sure where I could throw a fan in, besides what it already has! I guess I can just take the side off :)

Also, im a little confused on another point. When looking for a PSU that can feed my card on the 12V rail, ive seen some that are..

    +12V1 15A
    +12V2 15A
    +12V3 15A

Does that mean that I can run the card like this?

if you have no where to put one, what can you do? nothing (unless you get a new case) so dont worry and just hope your alright. if you have something that looks like this, [IMG]on the back of your case thats where they go(the square ones with a hole at each corner).

Hyper, Corsair, Tagan, Enermax and Seasonic all make top quality psu's.

    +12V1 15A
    +12V2 15A
    +12V3 15A

this means there are 3 seperate 12v lines but none will give you enough amps. you want one with atleast 2 lines and one with 30+amps. have a look for one with a dedicated pcie line with 30+ amps and modular cables if you can get them.

Ive been looking around, but I cant find a single PSU that will give me a straight 30+ Amps on a single 12V rail.

Can anyone please point in me the direction of one?

Can't help you much with that but i can reccomend Enermax and Hiper psu's, there pretty good. I'm running a Hiper type r and it pumps enough power to my X1900 XT.

Iv'e had a couple of enermax psu's whithin the past year but i thought i'd try a Hiper this time round as there cheaper, had positive reviews and there modular which is a big plus for me as the inside of my computer usually looks like it's full of crap.

Another important thing we need to know is, what socket are you running for your graphics card?, i'm guessing it's a pci-e socket as it's a x1950 card.
Just checking but, you do realise that the card requires it own power connector.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeh I understand that, just my PSU I had wasnt giving it enough power. Ive got a decent one now, works fine, but also found out I dont have enough cooling!! So im off to buy a new case.

Anyway, thanks for all your help!
